MONSTER ENERGY GRONK FORMULA #87
Released in 2016, the Monster Energy Gronk Formula #87 is a revamped version of the original Gronk. Not just a design refresh, this version also features different taste and ingredient profiles. I’ll be reviewing both the old and new versions to compare them.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Sweet and sour, easy-to-drink fruity classic and grape flavor
A sweet and sour classic flavor with a fruity grape-like scent, and a transparent, bright yellow color inside.
When you take a sip, you get the sweet, rich taste of the classic flavor, with a fruity taste similar to white grapes. There is no chemical or off-flavor, just a smooth taste.
Especially the aftertaste, the fresh white grape flavor lingers, allowing you to enjoy a fruity aftertaste with each sip.
By the way, the newly updated FORMULA #87 is a half-sugar product with about half the usual sugar content. This allows you to enjoy the smooth sweetness and fruity flavor without any cheap or unpleasant taste from artificial sweeteners. Despite being a classic flavor, the half-sugar FORMULA #87 offers a surprisingly delicious taste.
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY GRONK FORMULA #87
Contains 142mg of caffeine, taurine, and carnitine. As mentioned in the review, the calorie count is less than half the usual at 90kcal, with only 24g of sugar.
Design of MONSTER ENERGY GRONK FORMULA #87
The can has a monotonous design with a blue color throughout, with a large image of Gronk on the side.
The combination of the red Monster Energy logo, the word GRONK, and the blue can feels a bit cheap. I think the old Gronk design was better. The old design had colors and elements that clearly reflected the Patriots, but the FORMULA #87 has changed to a single blue color, with the only Gronk-related element being his image on the can. It's a bit disappointing.
Comparison of Old and New Gronk
While both products are named "GRONK," the original and the updated versions have different ingredients and flavors.
The left is FORMULA #87, and the right is the old Gronk. If you compare them, you can see that their colors are slightly different.
The FORMULA #87 on the left is noticeably a brighter yellow.
And when poured into a glass, the old Gronk foams up like beer, and the foam stays even after leaving it alone.
Now, let's compare the taste.
The old Gronk has a sweet, rich flavor with a chemical taste added in, making it a standard, chemical-flavored energy drink. It leaves behind a medicinal smell and bitterness, making it hard to enjoy if you're sensitive to chemical flavors.
FORMULA #87, on the other hand, offers a clearer, fruity, classic flavor that is easy to drink. The difference in taste between the two is very apparent.
As you can see from the ingredients, FORMULA #87 has less than half the calories and sugar. Despite that, it doesn't have a watered-down or artificial sweetener taste.
The design has changed so much that it's unnecessary to compare them, but Gronk's pose is slightly different. I didn't expect them to redraw him with the design update.
If you see the product on store shelves, you might think it's just a design update, but as you can see from the review, the contents are different in the new version. After tasting both, I really appreciated the improved taste of the new FORMULA #87. The update from the old Gronk, which had a typical chemical flavor, was definitely a step in the right direction.
