MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON

Posted on September 3, 2019 | Last updated February 9, 2025

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
Released in 2017 in the United States, Monster Energy's Hydro series, a non-carbonated sports drink, features the Manic Melon flavor. Starting around 2016, watermelon flavors were consecutively released in Europe and the U.S., becoming a standard. Manic Melon is one of those flavors, taking on the trend.

The Hydro series was released in a new container combining a plastic bottle material and a can top, making it a topic of conversation.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON

Since it's non-carbonated, the smell doesn't burst out when you open it. If you sniff carefully, you can faintly catch the distinctive melon scent often found in watermelon-flavored drinks. Compared to similar melon flavors released in Europe, Manic Melon has a subtle and natural aroma, so it doesn't come across as unpleasant.

The color is light red. Whether it's poured from the bottle or into a glass, it looks the same, so there's no real surprise to it (^_^;)

The flavor is artificial watermelon, and there's naturally no real fruitiness. The melon-like scent is barely noticeable when drinking, so you can enjoy the artificial watermelon flavor without any discomfort.

Overall, the flavor is light, and the sweetness is mild. If you're expecting the "strong taste" typically associated with energy drinks, it might leave you with a different impression. However, there’s nothing off-putting, and it's easy to drink, making it a good choice as a sports drink during exercise. There’s almost no unpleasant aftertaste from artificial sweeteners, which is great.

Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
It contains 125mg of caffeine and taurine. The caffeine level is relatively mild. Unlike regular Monster Energy, this Hydro series doesn't include the other herbal ingredients or amino acids.

With only 100kcal per bottle, it’s a low-calorie option, and the carbohydrates amount to 24g, less than half that of typical energy drinks.

Design of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON

The Hydro series from Monster Energy is known for its unique container, which combines a plastic bottle with a can top.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The connection part is nearly the same as an aluminum can. The plastic part is sturdier and thicker than usual, so even if you grip it tightly, it won’t dent, meaning it must withstand higher internal pressure.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The bottom of the bottle is noticeably indented. Despite this, it holds 500ml, and the Hydro 500ml bottle is slightly taller than a regular 500ml aluminum can.

A transparent label sticker is applied to the bottle’s surface.
MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The label for Manic Melon has a smooth texture. The other Hydro series bottles are a bit more slippery. There might be some other Hydro bottles with the same smooth texture, but personally, I prefer this one (●´ω`●).

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The "Hydrate the Beast" slogan is unique to the U.S. In Europe and other countries, different catchy phrases are used.

The tab is a light blue logo tab common to the Hydro series, perfectly matching the large Monster Energy logo's color.

Comparison of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON Between the U.S. and the U.K.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
After the Hydro series was released in the U.S., it was first introduced in Europe in the U.K. It then expanded across various European countries and has even been released in Africa. I decided to compare the U.S. version with the U.K. version, which played a major role in the global rollout.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The color of the U.K. Manic Melon is darker compared to the U.S. version.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
This is clearer from a different angle.

The U.K. version of Manic Melon lacks the melon scent that the U.S. version has, and it’s hard to say if it even smells like watermelon. The aroma doesn't give any clues about the flavor.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
When tasting it, the difference is that the U.K. version doesn’t have the melon-like scent, but otherwise, the sweetness and the light, refreshing taste are almost identical to the U.S. version. After multiple tastings, I couldn’t tell them apart. It’s rare for flavors to remain so similar when crossing continents (*´艸`*)

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The cap is larger, making it easy to drink in large gulps. It would have been nice if the cap color matched the light blue Monster Energy logo...

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
After its U.S. release, the Hydro series shifted to a large 750ml bottle with a can top. The European-style label was added to the larger bottles.

MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
For the European-style Hydro bottles, the slogan is placed in small font between the product description and the ingredients.

The right European version has a colored label, which makes the red bottle enjoyable even after finishing the drink.
MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO MANIC MELON
The American bottle is transparent, so after you finish drinking, the bottle turns into recycling waste (^_^;) By the way, Canadian bottles are also transparent, so the empty bottles don’t look great. Transparent bottles are best for drinking and display purposes.

Although there are usually slight differences in flavor between countries, the U.S. and U.K. versions of this drink taste almost the same, which is surprising. Compared to the price of sports drinks in Japan, it’s quite expensive, and it’s tough to drink regularly. However, it seems to have received enough support since 2019 with its expansion into various countries, or maybe it’s just a marketing push.

It’s sold in major tourist spots in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, so make sure to try it when traveling.
