MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO TROPICAL THUNDER
One of the three initial flavors of the Monster Energy Hydro series, Hydro Tropical Thunder. This is a non-carbonated sports drink with a classic tropical fruit flavor.
Currently, the pull-tab type has been discontinued, and it has been transformed into a large, reclosable pet bottle. It has become a staple series of Monster Energy, now sold worldwide, including in the U.S., Europe, and Africa.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO TROPICAL THUNDER
Upon opening, the scent of orange is immediately noticeable. The color is also orange, so you might forget that it’s a tropical fruit flavor.
The color is a slightly cloudy orange, and it feels light rather than rich.
Taking a sip, you’ll enjoy the light sweetness and a strong sweet scent that complements it, making for a tropical fruit flavor with a refreshing taste that doesn’t leave an overly sweet aftertaste. There’s almost no unpleasant taste of artificial sweeteners in the aftertaste or flavor, and everything feels neatly balanced in terms of taste and aroma.
Unlike the rich, real fruit juice varieties, this has an artificial taste, but since it’s a sports drink, I think the flavor is quite well done. Especially the fragrance is expertly crafted (*´ェ`*)
After drinking, there’s no lingering taste, yet you can still clearly experience the tropical fruit flavor, making it a great choice during exercise, with its sweet aroma enhancing the experience.
While the balance of flavor and aroma differs slightly by country, the original American Tropical Thunder is highly recommended not only during exercise but also as a refreshing drink like the Monster Rehab series for daily enjoyment ( ´∀`)bグッ!
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO TROPICAL THUNDER
Contains 125mg of caffeine and taurine. There are no herbal ingredients or amino acids, giving it a structure that is purely aimed at hydration. It could have been branded further if it included the Hydro series' unique energy blend.
Design of MONSTER ENERGY HYDRO TROPICAL THUNDER
This is the pull-tab pet bottle that once made waves in the global beverage industry. The silver top and the light blue tab give it a "Hydro" vibe.
It’s impressive how they’ve managed to combine the top of a pet bottle with a can-style opening.
The Hydro comes in a 500ml bottle, which is taller than the standard 473ml can available in the U.S.
Unlike the later released cap-type pet bottle (right), the can-top type (left) doesn't feature any functional logos.
After about a year, the can-top type reviewed here was discontinued, and the product line unified into the more portable and easy-to-use reclosable pet bottle.
As I mentioned in the review, while the can-top is fine for casual refreshment, it’s a bit inconvenient for exercise since the opening remains exposed (^_^;)
Perhaps the market demanded the practicality of a cap that can be closed and a larger size.
Comparison of Tropical Thunder in the U.S. and Europe
The Hydro series began in the U.S. and is now available worldwide, including in Europe. While the flavor name is the same, the taste varies slightly by country.
So this time, I’ll compare the U.S. Tropical Thunder with the U.K. version, which was released shortly afterward.
The color is almost identical. Without the bottles, it’s hard to tell which is which.
The scent of the U.S. version is more intense and prominent, whereas the U.K. version has just a faint aroma, with little fruitiness.
Now, let’s try the U.K. version of Tropical Thunder. The first impression is that while the scent and flavor when you take a sip do have a tropical fruit vibe, the sweetness is a bit lacking. In a good way, it's easy to drink, but in a bad way, it tastes watered down, almost like you can't really tell what the flavor is.
When compared to the U.S. version, the flavor is noticeably weaker. You can really tell how different the strength of the flavor is, even though it’s the same product.
The U.S. version has a nice richness and satisfaction, making it enjoyable to drink. On the other hand, the U.K. version is subtler, perfect for hydration without focusing on flavor. Both versions have their merits, but I think the American one offers a greater sense of satisfaction.
Here’s a look at the functional logo on the bottle label. Here, I’m comparing it with the 750ml bottle in the U.S.
The U.K. version has a "reduced sugar" logo, which isn’t present on the U.S. bottle. This logo also appears on the Hydro series in other European countries.
Originally, the U.S. version of the can-top didn’t have this logo, but it certainly helps add to the "sports drink" feel, so it’s a good addition.
This is an empty bottle. On the left is the U.S. version, and on the right is the U.K. version.
In the U.K., these narrow bottles come with a pre-colored orange label, so even when the drink is finished, you can enjoy the color of the liquid inside. It’s a nice touch for collectors who appreciate the appearance even after the drink is gone (;´∀`)
The cap of the bottle has the Monster Energy logo printed on it. Some countries and products have it, while others don’t, but the logo definitely adds a nice finishing touch.
When the can-top type was first released in the U.S., I thought the Hydro series wouldn’t last long, but it’s been surprisingly popular and has continued to expand globally. Now that the U.S. has switched to reclosable pet bottles and has increased the number of flavors, it seems to have gained more support than expected!
