In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY KHAOS
The U.S. version of Monster Energy Khaos contains only 30% fruit juice, which is relatively low. While the reason for this isn’t entirely clear, I immediately noticed that its sweetness—especially from sugar and other sweeteners—felt slightly stronger than Japan’s Monster Energy Khaos. This was apparent from the very first sip at room temperature, though after a few more sips, it wasn’t too overwhelming.
I recall that Khaos originally contained 50% fruit juice, but after looking into it, it seems this was reduced to 30% at some point. By 2013, the formula had already been adjusted. If it had remained at 50%, the taste might have been nearly identical to Japan’s Monster Energy Khaos. That said, even with the current 30%, the difference is hardly noticeable unless you have both versions side by side for a direct comparison.
Sediment from the 30% Fruit Juice
There is some sediment in Khaos, but it appears to be less than in Japan’s version. To give you an idea, the Japanese Khaos has a constant swirling effect, with sediment continuously rising and falling, whereas the U.S. version has a much lighter motion—more like a gentle, subtle drift. In the American version, you can still see through the liquid, even as the particles float around.
Despite this difference, the sediment is still noticeable. If you ever have the chance to try both versions, I recommend comparing them to see the distinction for yourself.
Light Carbonation and Rich Orange Juice Flavor
The carbonation is quite mild, making it feel less fizzy. The orange juice flavor is very strong, with a pronounced sweetness, while Monster Energy’s signature lingering aroma adds an extra layer of intensity. Whether it’s easy to drink depends on your tolerance for sweetness—some might find it overwhelmingly rich and struggle to finish a can. (;´∀`)
However, as an energy drink enthusiast, I had no problem finishing mine quickly. Drinking it at room temperature without ice makes the orange and sweetness stand out even more, enhancing the overall drinking experience.
If you deliberately let the carbonation fade and drink it at room temperature, you can fully appreciate its thick, syrupy sweetness. Personally, I love Monster Energy Khaos enough to enjoy it at this extreme level of sweetness. (*´艸`*)
