In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
It Could Be Called a Lighter Version of MONSTER ENERGY
The main feature of MONSTER ENERGY Low Carb is the low carbohydrate and sugar content. In energy drinks, sugar usually takes up a large portion, but this low-carb version contains only 7g of sugar in 473ml. The calorie count is only 25kcal, which might raise some concerns, but the taste is solid, and the aroma and sweetness are exactly like MONSTER ENERGY. There is zero disappointment.
The difference in taste is mainly that the acidity is increased, giving it a lighter feel. The typical heavy sweetness of MONSTER ENERGY is more subdued. The aftertaste remains strong, providing a high level of satisfaction, but the rich aroma when first tasted is more moderate and light. Since it tastes like this at room temperature, it becomes even lighter when chilled. When cold, the sweetness decreases significantly, and the acidity becomes stronger, so if you want to taste the natural sweetness of the ingredients, room temperature is best. On the other hand, if it's chilled in the fridge, the low-carb version is surprisingly easy to drink, and I can quickly finish a 16oz can.
One to Keep Stocked
If you want an energy drink that retains the essence of MONSTER ENERGY but with acidity and a solid aroma, MONSTER ENERGY Low Carb is a good choice for those who want a high satisfaction energy drink while maintaining their health. There's also the Absolutely Zero series from MONSTER ENERGY, which offers a completely sugar-free option, but for some reason, the Low Carb feels lighter. Even though it still contains sugar (´・ω・`). In Japan, the Ab Zero is available, so that's the only option, but in the U.S., if you want something light, Low Carb is the way to go, while if you want something richer, Ab Zero would be the choice. I feel like the aroma in the U.S. version of Ab Zero is a bit stronger. Both flavors follow a similar profile, so you can drink either with confidence.
Packed with Energy Ingredients
Although the flavor may change, the energy ingredients remain well-packed. It contains guarana, ginseng, caffeine, maltodextrin, taurine, carnitine, and more. Even though the sugar content is reduced, maltodextrin is still present, so it might have a slight energizing effect, which gives me a faint hope.
