This is the Phantom from the Monster Energy M-100 series, released in the summer of 2015. It was a limited edition release, not listed on the official website, and was discontinued after less than a year, with the remaining stock being sold off for just a dollar.

Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY M-100 PHANTOM

From the can color, you can easily guess that it's an orange flavor. Once opened, it releases a strong, Fanta-like carbonated orange juice scent. Pouring it into a glass, you get a bright orange juice color, just as you’d imagine.

When drinking it, it tastes just like classic carbonated orange juice, with a flavor very similar to Fanta Orange. Rather than a real orange taste, it leans heavily on the sugary sweetness that you find in drinks like Fanta, with no acidity and not too thick or rich, so it’s easy to keep drinking in the summer!

It’s a very refreshing flavor, perfect for gulping down in about a minute. If you’re thirsty and need to drink quickly, the M-100 Phantom is great for that, but if you want to sip it slowly, the flavor might feel a little too simple for that.

There’s a slight aftertaste from artificial sweeteners, but it’s not too strong. I think they’ve crafted it well, though. It’s not the most amazing flavor, but it’s very well-executed. In a way, it’s a top-tier carbonated orange juice, although if someone told me it was Fanta Orange inside the M-100 Phantom can, I’d probably believe it. (^_^;)

Contains 100mg of caffeine, taurine, guarana, ginseng, and carnitine as part of the energy blend. Overall, though, the energy blend feels a bit lacking.

The can is covered with a rough, camo-like texture, making it stand out. Compared to the Ghost version, I prefer this Phantom design. (●´ω｀●)

The M-100 on the top of the can signifies 100 calories, 100% of the daily vitamins, and 100mg of caffeine. For an orange flavor, they could have made it 100% orange as a limited edition, which would’ve been fun. With the Ghost flavor, that wouldn’t work, but it would’ve been interesting to see the M-100 series do something like that with various '100' concepts.

It seems they didn’t plan to make this a regular offering and intended to sell most of it within a year, so they could’ve even gone with 100% juice. And indeed, it was discontinued within a year. I hope Monster will release more bold products like Rockstar does.

By the way, while there are many orange-tab cans circulating, there are also black-tab cans. During my visits to more than 100 stores in Las Vegas in November 2015 and Los Angeles in February 2016, I only found the black tab at AMPM, so it’s no longer available, but it was a learning experience to see how availability differs by store.
