MONSTER ENERGY MAXX SOLARIS
This is a review of MONSTER ENERGY MAXX SOLARIS, a new release in the Monster Energy MAXX series from 2018.
As a new flavor in the MAXX series, "Solaris" along with "Eclipse" seems to be inspired by space themes! Among the three MAXX flavors released simultaneously, Solaris stands out with a slightly different approach. It's a flavor I'd highly recommend trying if you get the chance.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY MAXX SOLARIS
The moment I opened the can, there was a familiar scent, but I couldn’t quite pinpoint what flavor it was... Monster Ultra Red? It kind of smells like berries? It’s a hard-to-place aroma.
When poured into a glass, there’s no distinctive nitrous-style fizz, and it has a slightly cloudy rose pink color. The lack of fizz is similar to Eclipse.
Since the scent is a bit tricky to review, let me cautiously taste it to figure out what the flavor is like.
First, a smooth, nitrous-like texture spreads in my mouth, along with a pleasant berry-like tartness, and the fruit sweetness and refreshing quality also make for a satisfying flavor. The previous series, Extra Strength, had a stronger punch in terms of flavor and scent, but MAXX doesn’t seem to rely solely on strength for its defining feature.
Although the flavor feels rich overall, it naturally enters my mouth without leaving any unpleasant aftertaste or residue, which is the unique taste of MAXX Nitrous. The balance of this rich, fruity deliciousness, which smoothly fades without any awkward lingering, makes me want to drink it again.
Possibly the Pinnacle of Floral Flavors
As I continued drinking, I realized that, in addition to the berry and cherry-like fruity tastes and flavors similar to Ultra Red, I could also detect a floral scent typical of Japanese Red Bull Spring Edition and the American Rockstar Jamaica Cooler.
With various berry and cherry-like tartness, combined with a refreshing floral aroma, this flavor can’t simply be categorized as a fruity flavor—it’s a complex taste and scent, which makes it hard to explain in a review (^_^;)
If you drink MAXX Solaris first, and ideally try the Spring Edition or Jamaica Cooler afterward, you’ll get a better sense of what a fruity and fresh floral flavor is like.
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY MAXX SOLARIS
It contains the standard 180mg of caffeine for the MAXX series, as well as taurine and carnitine. It doesn’t include guarana or ginseng, making it quite a simple formulation. It’s unclear why Solaris is so different in terms of ingredients.
Design of MONSTER ENERGY MAXX SOLARIS
MAXX Solaris, like MAXX Eclipse, features a different “MAXX MONSTER” design. Looking at them side by side, the colors are completely different.
This “MAXX MONSTER” is sometimes called a “pre-release,” but for those familiar with the American distribution, it’s actually part of a “first release design” that was sold in specific regions, such as the American Midwest and Hawaii.
The text on the back also differs between MONSTER MAXX and MAXX MONSTER.
Interestingly, the official website uses images of MONSTER MAXX, but the text says MAXX MONSTER. There are many inconsistencies, and since it’s also available through general distribution, calling it a pre-release seems a bit off.
There hasn’t been any official announcement, so it’s hard to get accurate information, but looking into the differences and distribution features of these two can reveal some interesting insights!
The tab has a black logo. It might eventually become a colored tab, like the MAXX Super Dry. It’s fine as it is, but a pink tab might make it even cuter and increase the sense of ownership.
If It Were a Space-Themed Series, It Could Be Interesting
The background color design has been completely revamped from the previous Extra Strength series. The product names, like “Eclipse” and “Solaris,” now feature space-inspired themes.
If the background design is meant to evoke nebulae and explosions, as well as match the product names, there’s a high likelihood that space-themed new products will come out in the future.
This is because there’s no need to stick to existing drink or food flavors for the product names, which gives a sense of freedom and possibility. The Solaris, which I reviewed here, is a clear example of this trend.
Although it’s disappointing that the shared theme of anti-gravity has disappeared, with MAXX’s relaunch, this series, which hasn’t seen many new flavors in the past, could have a bright future (●´ω`●)
