MONSTER ENERGY MULE GINGER BREW
This is a review of the new MONSTER ENERGY MULE GINGER BREW, which was released in 2018 in select stores and regions in the United States.
Since it is sold in areas that tourists, including Japanese, typically don't visit, it might be a bit difficult to get. Due to this distribution method, it is not listed on the official Monster website.
*As of 2019, a newly designed and reformulated MONSTER ENERGY MULE GINGER BREW has been released nationwide in the U.S.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY MULE GINGER BREW
As soon as you open it, a burst of ginger aroma hits you. This scent is quite sharp and reminds me of the spicy ginger taste in Japan, so I personally don't quite like it... (ヽ´ω`)
The liquid is a pale yellow, which was a bit surprising. I expected a richer color, but it's actually quite gentle.
While I was cautious because of the ginger scent, I took a sip. Despite the ginger's strong aroma, the flavor itself is mainly a honey-like sweetness with a mix of concentrated lime, creating a tropical fruit flavor. It has the taste and aroma of a sweet ginger ale. I was relieved to find it wasn't spicy at all (^_^;)
It’s mentioned that ginger extract is included in the ingredients, but the flavor isn’t overwhelmingly strong. The slight tingling sensation in the throat and the aftertaste on the tongue are the only noticeable effects. It doesn’t have the intense spiciness you might expect. Whether this is good or bad depends on personal preference, but those who love a spicy ginger ale may find it lacking.
Recommended: Enjoying the Refreshing Flavor When It's Really Chilled
Drinking it when it's slightly chilled, compared to room temperature, the honey-lime sweetness becomes overwhelming, making it taste very similar to honey lemon drinks from Japan. However, when it's really chilled, the lime enhances the refreshing feeling, and the overall experience is much more invigorating. I believe the more ice you add, the better it tastes.
Since Monster Mule is naturally sweet and has a decent amount of sugar, even when chilled, it doesn’t lose its flavor and maintains a satisfying taste. If it had less sugar and relied on artificial sweeteners, chilling it would likely cause the flavor and aroma to disappear, and the taste of the artificial sweeteners would become more pronounced. The level of sweetness in Monster Mule is just right, and adding ice enhances the flavor and satisfaction.
So, I recommend drinking Monster Mule ice-cold. Personally, I like to fill a small glass with ice and pour just a little bit of Monster Mule in, sipping it in two quick gulps. It’s best not to let the ice melt too much, as it would dilute the flavor. Highly recommended (●´ω`●)
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY MULE
Contains 160mg of caffeine, taurine, carnitine, inositol, and Monster Energy blend ingredients.
The aroma and slight tingling sensation come from the ginger extract. I’m relieved it didn’t have that overly spicy taste that’s often found in Japan’s ginger drinks. ε-(´∀`*)ホッ
Monster Mule’s Design: Photogenic and Stylish
The actual product doesn’t have an especially unique feeling (though it does seem special since it’s unfamiliar), but when you take a photo, the design really stands out. The black textured finish, combined with the copper-colored Monster logo and decorations, gives it a shiny, high-end look, especially when the can casts shadows. At first, I didn’t think the design was particularly great, but after taking some photos, my opinion changed! (laughs)
You can see some bullet marks near the flavor and ingredient labels. I'm not sure why they chose to add this "chūnibyō" style detail here...
The tab is a black-ring tab. If it eventually becomes available nationwide in the U.S., we might see the black logo tab as well.
Monster Energy Mule as a Moscow Mule-Inspired Drink
As mentioned in the Monster Mule story, the Russian, ginger, lime, and copper-themed can makes it clear that the product was inspired by the Moscow Mule cocktail.
When I first saw the product name MONSTER MULE and GINGER BREW, I thought it might be a Moscow Mule-inspired flavor. When making a Moscow Mule cocktail, ginger beer is used. I did a bit of research for this review, and I found that when you make it the traditional way, it’s served in a copper mug.
Given the copper-themed can design, it seems clear that this product was inspired by Moscow Mule. These little details are part of what makes Monster Energy so interesting. I really enjoyed reviewing this one! (*´艸`*)
