The third release in the Mutant series, White Lightning, was launched in 2017. It is the only sugar-free product in the Mutant series.

The Mutant series was discontinued less than a year after the release of this third product, making it a rather short-lived line.

Zero-like Calpis Flavor with No Zero Taste, Very Similar to MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA

Upon taking a sip, you get a sweet lychee flavor, with a slight hint of Calpis, which makes it easy to mistake it for Zero Ultra if you weren’t told otherwise.

It does contain carbonation, but the bottle is so thin that the carbonation is weak, almost like a non-carbonated drink, resulting in a lack of freshness. Since the carbonation is too weak, the flavor ends up feeling flat and sweet only, which is a bit disappointing compared to the more vibrant taste of Ultra.

That said, achieving this level of sweetness with zero sugar is still impressive.

While the regular Mutant series contains a lot of sugar and calories, White Lightning delivers the same taste without the zero feel, so I personally rate the flavor and ingredients of White Lightning highly.

The MUTANT SUPER SODA WHITE LIGHTNING was discontinued a year after its release, but before it was discontinued, a collaboration label with Deadpool was released. The collaboration label was a nice touch for this short-lived product.

During the 2018 Los Angeles trip, they were being sold at a deep discount of 50 yen per can.
