MONSTER ENERGY Rehab WATERMELON
Released in January 2022. From the Rehab series, which offers low-calorie, non-carbonated fruit teas, comes the surprisingly non-tea, non-carbonated watermelon flavor, MONSTER ENERGY Rehab WATERMELON.
Originally, the Rehab series was known for its sweet and refreshing fruit teas, but this time, there's no tea involved. This shift seems to align with the recent trend of Rehab series promoting hydration for workouts rather than focusing on tea beverages. However, it feels like a bit of a misstep in direction.
Now, let’s dive into a detailed review of the non-carbonated watermelon flavor, comparing it with the pre-release sample.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MONSTER ENERGY Rehab WATERMELON
Opening the can, a strawberry scent bursts out. While the product name is "Watermelon," there is no distinct watermelon-like freshness or fruitiness. Instead, it has a scent similar to MONSTER ENERGY RESERVE WATERMELON. The color is a soft pink, reminiscent of watermelon flesh that's been grated, giving it a natural look. Let’s take a sip.
The taste is a sweet, refreshing strawberry candy flavor with a light mouthfeel. If you try to imagine a watermelon flavor while drinking, you might barely feel the watermelon? Honestly, I was hoping for a more pronounced watermelon taste. It’s not strong enough to be called a “watermelon-flavored drink.”
The aftertaste is clean, and with its non-carbonated and low-sugar properties, it’s refreshing and easy to drink.
If you’re not too particular about getting an authentic watermelon flavor, it’s a sugar-free, body-friendly drink that would be convenient for morning hydration.
Comparison with SALES SAMPLE
Before the release of MONSTER ENERGY Rehab WATERMELON, I had received a "SALES SAMPLE," so I decided to compare it with the final product.
What surprised me when I poured both was how different the colors were. While both had a similar strawberry scent, it seems like they changed the color during production. Let’s take a sip and compare.
Upon tasting, the SALES SAMPLE had a more subtle sweetness.
The base flavor of "a strawberry-like watermelon flavor" was the same. It’s clear that they decided not to add the typical watermelon notes, such as the greenish aroma, in the sample phase.
After comparing, the final product has a stronger candy-like fruit flavor, making it more impactful than the SALES SAMPLE.
It’s hard to say which is better in terms of taste, but I do wish the watermelon flavor could have been more prominent.
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY Rehab WATERMELON
The drink contains 150mg of caffeine, taurine, carnitine, inositol, and milk thistle.
Previously, the Rehab series was a tea-based energy drink, but this time, there are no tea leaves included.
Design of MONSTER ENERGY Rehab WATERMELON
The can features a watermelon-inspired color scheme of red and green, with a green tab that contrasts nicely against the black top.
The flat design, with its use of solid colors, doesn’t quite capture the essence of the flavor or the brand’s world.
On the back, you won’t find the usual energy poem; instead, there are functional icons.
From the list of icons, you can tell that this is a functional sports drink rather than the tea energy beverage that Rehab used to be.
While Rehab was once beloved as a fruit tea series with tea leaves, with the removal of the tea energy focus, it has now become a non-carbonated drink series without much character. It’s a bit disappointing. I also think the icons could have been more stylish to give the design a more polished feel.
