In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon (Japan)

Upon opening, a sweet strawberry-like aroma greets you. Unlike the typical melon-like smell often found in North American watermelon drinks, this seems to replicate the sweetness of watermelon flesh. The scent is quite similar to the original American version. Let's take a sip and see.
Flavor of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
The taste is a sweet strawberry candy flavor.

At regular refrigeration temperature, if you were told it’s watermelon flavor, you might vaguely think it has watermelon taste, but the watermelon flavor itself isn't very strong. It leans more toward a candy-like drink rather than the taste of real fruit. This gives a similar impression to the American version.

The aftertaste is relatively mild, and because it’s closer to a half-sugar product, it feels light on the palate.

To really bring out the watermelon flavor, the best way is to add ice and chill it thoroughly. Personally, I’d recommend the version with ice.
Flavor of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
By adding plenty of ice and reducing unnecessary flavors, the refreshing and aromatic taste of watermelon flesh becomes more pronounced, making it feel much more like a true watermelon flavor. At regular refrigeration temperature, it might feel a little too sweet for watermelon.

Watermelon-flavored drinks are a balancing act between the strength of the aroma and flavor, and companies often showcase their skill in achieving a good balance. It’s one of the fruit flavors that’s tricky to replicate in a tasty way. Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon leans toward the candy or syrup side rather than a realistic watermelon taste.

Comparison of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon (Japan) and U.S. Versions

Now, let's compare the Japanese and American versions of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon. On the left is the Japanese version, and on the right is the American version.
Comparison of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
Looking at the color alone, both are the same, and there’s virtually no difference in transparency or cloudiness. The aroma is also nearly identical, to the point where it’s hard to tell which is which.

Upon tasting, both have a sweet and tart strawberry-like flavor, but the American version has a stronger acidity, while the Japanese version is sweeter and milder. The base flavor is the same, but the Japanese version has a more subdued acidity and a stronger sweetness.

Energy Ingredients of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon (Japan)

Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
Contains 142mg of caffeine, 188mg of arginine, 291mg of ginseng, and 102.95mg of carnitine. The sugar content is relatively low at about 25g, which matches the concept of the U.S. version.

Design of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon (Japan)

A feature of the Reserve Series is the Monster Energy brand name displayed vertically on the right side of the can.
Design of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
The black can with red accents is simple and maintains the classic Monster Energy look. It brings to mind the early 2000s, a nostalgic era.

Design of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
Another feature of the Reserve Series is the rough texture applied to red areas, such as the logo.

In Japan, several products have been released with the black and red color scheme.
Design of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
For those who don't often drink energy drinks, it might be hard to tell what makes this product different.

Design of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
The design of the Japanese version is almost the same as the American version, with only differences in the series name part. There doesn’t seem to be any major changes.

Design of Monster Energy Reserve Watermelon
The tab is the red tab, which has been used in previous products like Cuba Libre and Super Cola.

In addition to the watermelon flavor released in Japan, there are other excellent flavors in the U.S. Reserve Series, and it would be great if they were also released in Japan.
