In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Monster Energy Rossi (Japan)
When poured into a glass, it reveals a bright, cloudy yellow liquid. Even before drinking, you can enjoy the cloudiness of the juice, which is referred to as "Divine Mist." The scent is a citrus fruit mix, a little noticeable but not overpowering.
Taking a sip, the sweetness of orange blends with the citrus scent, followed by a refreshing orange peel-like sourness that quickly spreads across the mouth. The first impression is that it’s a much fresher taste compared to the earlier "The Doctor" I tried.
However, as you continue drinking, the citrusy tartness and fragrance linger on the tongue, with the refreshing citrus fruit and orange peel scent and kick staying strong. It's refreshing yet quite satisfying. It's so good that you might end up finishing it all in one go.
The juice sediment becomes clearly visible when poured into the glass. Be sure to try pouring it into a glass. We refer to this at Energy Drink Mania as "Divine Mist." This can be seen in Monster Energy products that contain fruit juice.
Energy Ingredients of Monster Rossi (Japan)
It contains 124mg of caffeine, 188mg of arginine, 291mg of ginseng, 11mg of carnitine, and guarana. The caffeine content is a bit on the lower side, and it doesn’t seem to contain D-ribose.
The 4% fruit juice is made up of orange and lemon. Even though the fruit juice is just 4%, the flavor and fragrance it provides last long, offering a great balance of refreshing taste and satisfaction.
Monster Rossi (Japan) vs. "The Doctor"
For some reason, the product name in Japan is "Monster Rossi." There's no mention of "Rossi" on the front of the can, so it would look like just "Monster Energy The Doctor" at first glance.
If you turn the can slightly, you’ll find "ROSSI" written on the top... But still, the name "Rossi" feels a bit off in Japan.
Some people might find the silver top of the can a bit light, but still, the combination of the black line and black tab on the top part of the can is eye-catching (*´艸`*). If it had a black top, it would make the design even sharper. Hopefully, they will try that sometime!
Comparison of Monster Rossi (Japan) and EU "The Doctor"
I compared the design of the Japanese version of Monster Rossi with the EU version of The Doctor. On the left is the UK version (500ml), and on the right is the Japanese version (355ml).
A noticeable difference in can design is around the "THE DOCTOR" logo. The Japanese Monster Rossi lacks red, so when compared like this, it looks a bit flat (ヽ´ω`).
The 355ml can has a beautiful silhouette with a rough texture and black tab, and overall, the quality is high, but the color of the "THE DOCTOR" part is a bit disappointing. When compared, the difference is quite clear, but if you only look at the Japanese Monster Rossi, the difference might not feel so noticeable.
Now, let’s compare the taste of the UK’s "The Doctor" and Japan’s Monster Energy Rossi.
On the left is Japan's Monster Energy Rossi, and on the right is the UK's The Doctor. The color is richer in Japan.
From the top, it’s clear that the "Divine Mist" stands out more in Japan's Monster Rossi. I didn’t expect such a difference.
Now, let’s take a taste.
Hmm? Both taste almost the same. Even when drinking them alternately, there’s hardly any noticeable difference. Both offer an exquisite citrusy orange fruit flavor. If I had to find a difference, the UK version has a slightly stronger tartness and a more distinct orange peel taste. The Japanese version is a bit milder.
But the difference is so small that it’s barely noticeable unless you compare them directly. The 4% orange and lemon juice content is the same, so it seems they faithfully recreated the original UK version. This is a great move.
Monster Rossi (Japan) Re-release on October 12, 2021
With the second energy drink boom still going strong, it was finally decided that Monster Energy Rossi would be re-released in Japan. This time, it will be sold as a regular product, not just a limited edition.
The design of the re-released Monster Rossi is the same as the old one.
On the left is the 2021 re-release of Rossi, and on the right is the 2017 limited edition. The Japanese-specific color scheme of blue, white, and orange for "THE DOCTOR" remained unchanged in the new release.
The back design has slightly changed, with the social media logo vertically aligned, but there is hardly any difference.
And the nutritional information display is the same. Of course, the refreshing orange fruit and orange peel flavor remains as delightful as ever.
Many people will likely try Monster Energy Rossi for the first time with the 2021 re-release. Currently, aside from the original, Pipeline Punch is probably the most popular, but I believe Monster Energy Rossi will become just as popular.
※It will be discontinued in mid-June 2024.

よく「どんな味?」と聞かれますが、これは「CCレモン」に例えられる味だと思います。ザ・エナジーという感じではなく、ジュースという感じで飲めるのでおすすめです。
