Monster Energy Super Cola (Old Bottle Can)

Posted on March 29, 2021 | Last updated February 4, 2025

Monster Energy Super Cola
Released on March 30, 2021, this is Monster Energy's original Japanese flavor, Super Cola.

The 500ml super-sized bottle stands out with its presence. What kind of taste does Super Cola have? Is it different from the previously released Cuba Libre flavor? I'll review the flavor, including a comparison of the two.

*Note: On August 9, 2022, it was renewed into a 355ml can. Here is the review of the new Super Cola.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Taste of Monster Energy Super Cola (Old Bottle Can)

When poured into a glass, it shows a rich cola color. The release of Super Cola sparked speculation that it might replace Cuba Libre, but it looks more like "Coca-Cola," which is darker than Cuba Libre. So, how does it taste? Let’s try it out right away.
Monster Energy Super Cola
The taste is smooth, with a mild sweetness and a tangy hint. It’s an easy-to-drink, normal cola flavor.

It’s likely that most people will think it’s "not very energy drink-like." It’s just a regular cola flavor (second time saying this). With a name like "Super Cola," which sounds a bit over the top and fitting for Monster Energy, one might expect an intense taste, but in that case, this is a flavor that might feel a bit underwhelming (^_^;)

Monster Energy Super Cola
The tang lingers a bit, but there isn’t much aftertaste. It’s quite sweet, so I found it tasted better when served ice-cold rather than at refrigerator temperature.

By the way, after writing the review for Super Cola, I conducted a survey like this:

The results of the poll showed that half of the people predicted it would taste like Cuba Libre. In reality, it turned out to be a regular cola flavor, but just for fun, let’s compare Super Cola with Cuba Libre!

Comparing Super Cola with Cuba Libre

On the left is Super Cola, and on the right is Cuba Libre. The colors are completely different.
Monster Energy Super Cola
Cuba Libre has a much lighter color, while Super Cola has a rich, deep cola color.

When comparing them, the cola flavor base is similar. The difference lies in the smooth sweetness of Super Cola versus the refreshing, sharp tang of Cuba Libre.

Monster Energy Super Cola
Let me break down the differences in taste. Cuba Libre has a refreshing texture and a unique tang, reminiscent of lime. The aftertaste and aroma persist, and it’s an overall cola with a sharp, citrusy tang.

On the other hand, Super Cola features a smooth, sweet flavor. After tasting Cuba Libre, you can really appreciate the soft, enveloping sweetness. The direction of flavor is completely different from Cuba Libre.

I wonder which one will become more popular...!?

Energy Ingredients of Monster Energy Super Cola (Old Bottle Can)

Monster Energy Super Cola
It contains 200mg of caffeine, 265mg of arginine, 425mg of ginseng, and 145mg of carnitine. The caffeine amount has only increased because the bottle size is now 500ml, but the caffeine content per 100ml is the same as in other Monster Energy products.

If you drink two bottles of Super Cola in one day, you’ll reach the daily caffeine intake guideline of 400mg, so be cautious not to overconsume, especially when considering coffee, tea, or green tea.

Design of Monster Energy Super Cola (Old Bottle Can)

Monster Energy Super Cola
This is the 500ml bottle can exclusive to Japan. Recently, more 500ml energy drinks have been appearing, but this one is taller, giving it a more impressive and striking appearance.

Monster Energy Super Cola
The naming of "SUPER COLA" has sparked mixed opinions on social media (^_^;) Personally, I think "Monster Super Cola" would have been a better name if it were just "Monster Cola."

Monster Energy Super Cola
A poem on the Super Cola can. There are some cringe-worthy parts, but the phrase "super smooth and refreshing taste" is spot on, matching what I wrote in the review. The smooth sweetness that envelops the taste is just as intended for Super Cola, offering a different kind of deliciousness from Cuba Libre.

Can Monster Energy Super Cola Become a Long-Lasting, Popular Product?

By the way, I was personally doubtful about the release of Cuba Libre. Cuba Libre is the Japanese version of a product that was discontinued in the U.S., and cola flavors often don’t last long even with big brands. So when they released a regular cola flavor as a new product, it was quite a surprise (´∀`;)

For me, having tried hundreds of energy drinks, whether it’s a regular cola or a flavorless sparkling water type, I don’t feel any particular difference. But I’m really curious how Super Cola will be received by people in Japan, who don’t consume energy drinks very often. After all, a 1.5L bottle of original Coca-Cola costs less than 200 yen, while a Monster Super Cola bottle costs around 300 yen...

Most of those who voted probably drink energy drinks regularly, so they might be okay with the 300 yen price for the Monster bottle can. The question is how people feel once they actually try it. Please share your thoughts on Super Cola through the reviews posted below the page.

Bonus: Comparing Coca-Cola with Monster Energy Super Cola

Earlier, I compared Cuba Libre with Super Cola, but I forgot to compare it with the king of cola, "Coca-Cola Original" (´∀`;)

On the left is Monster Energy Super Cola (about 300 yen), and on the right is Coca-Cola (about 90 yen).
Look at the price difference! lol
Monster Energy Super Cola and Coca-Cola Comparison
The color difference is clear when placed side by side. Coca-Cola’s color is very similar to that of Super Cola. If you swapped the glasses around, you’d be hard-pressed to tell which is which. However, while the colors are similar, the taste is immediately distinguishable.

Now, let’s compare the taste.
Monster Energy Super Cola and Coca-Cola Comparison
Coca-Cola has a lighter sweetness, with a refreshing mouthfeel that doesn’t leave too much of an aftertaste. Coca-Cola is a versatile drink that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with meals or snacks, offering a crisp and refreshing experience at any time.

Super Cola, on the other hand, is quite sweet. It’s about twice as sweet as Coca-Cola, with a smooth sweetness and a tangy aftertaste. It might be a little too sweet to drink alongside food. Super Cola is best enjoyed on its own. The "all-encompassing sweetness" is something I truly felt after tasting it. When you drink Coca-Cola after Super Cola, it tastes like Super Cola (;´∀`) That’s how strong the flavor is. So, I personally prefer drinking Super Cola with lots of ice.

In terms of nutritional ingredients, the composition is almost identical. The calorie and carbohydrate content is almost the same. Super Cola doesn’t have an exceptionally high amount of sugar either.

Monster Energy Super Cola and Coca-Cola Comparison
The real difference lies in the energy blend. It’s interesting to compare cola with an energy drink since it’s not something you often do. It’s fascinating to see how much the taste can differ, even when the base ingredients are the same.

When you compare it to the standard cola, Coca-Cola Original, it becomes clear what makes Monster Energy’s cola flavor stand out. The price difference and other factors are high hurdles for Super Cola to overcome, but it will be interesting to see how popular it becomes.

How Do People Rate Monster Energy Super Cola (Old Bottle Can)?

Monster Energy Super Cola Ratings
Since the release of Super Cola, I conducted a taste review survey. Most of the respondents are likely people who regularly drink energy drinks.

The rating was split, with around 56% of respondents giving a high rating and around 44% giving a low rating. The high rating was slightly more popular, but considering that the expectation for the new Monster Energy product was high, perhaps some felt disappointed by the taste or the price compared to regular cola. It’s unusual for the results to be so evenly split.
