MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA ROSA
The new Monster Energy release in 2020, Ultra Rosa. Officially, it's "ULTRA ROSÁ," but for search engine optimization, it seems better to go with "ULTRA ROSA" in English.
There are also pre-release sales samples available, so I'll be comparing those as well.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Taste of MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA ROSA
The bright, cloudy pink color of the Ultra series, similar to the can color, sparkles. The scent didn’t spread much until I poured it into a glass, and it was quite subtle. From the can design, I imagined a floral scent, but it turned out to be a sweet fruit candy-like aroma. Hmm!?
Let’s give it a taste.
When I took a sip, I noticed the sweet and tangy flavor of strawberry, lychee, and red berries. It’s not a real fruit flavor, but more like a sweet and sour candy that combines these fruits. It feels like a fruitier, sweeter version of Zero Ultra.
The more you explore the flavors in the Ultra series, the more you get this peculiar taste—an “Ultra unique flavor.” This distinctive flavor is also quite strong in ULTRA ROSA. Thanks to the sweetness and aroma typical of Ultra drinks, the taste of artificial sweeteners is softened, and you might not even realize it’s zero sugar.
By the way, this “Ultra unique flavor” is something you’ll notice in Zero Ultra, Ultra Red, Ultra Blue, etc. If you're curious, try them slowly, especially focusing on the taste of artificial sweeteners.
Comparing the Product Version and Sales Sample
Since I had a pre-release sales sample, let’s compare it with the product version. The product version is on the left, and the sales sample is on the right.
I didn’t expect the colors to differ this much. When lined up, the beautiful pink of the product version is nice, but if you want a more natural, soft pink, the sales sample's lighter pink is also an option.
As for the taste, they seem pretty much the same. I felt that the sales sample had a slightly more pronounced sourness, but after comparing them repeatedly, I don’t think the difference is that big. They’re almost identical.
The ingredients are the same.
Both designs feature roses, but the sales sample on the right has more rose thorns. Maybe the product version softened the aggressive impression a bit? It’s interesting to notice the differences in the color and the fine details of the design.
Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA ROSA
Contains 150mg of caffeine, taurine, ginseng, carnitine, and more.
Previously, the Ultra series was zero-calorie and zero-sugar, but now with the 2020 new releases, both the Ultra Fiesta and Ultra Rosa, and all of the Ultra series, have no sugar but are no longer zero-calorie as indicated by the “ZERO SUGAR” label on the can top.
Design of MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA ROSA
As the name Ultra Rosa suggests, the can’s sides feature lots of roses. Compared to the lively Ultra Fiesta, released at the same time, this one feels more subtle.
I initially thought the can design and product name would hint at a floral, unique taste. Something like Japan’s Red Bull’s Spring Edition, MAXX Solaris, or Rockstar Jamaica Cooler. I personally enjoy these kinds of unique floral and sweet-sour flavors, and I thought this would be a sugar-free version of that. However, it wasn’t quite like that.
While I think the taste is undeniably good, I feel that more distinctive flavors, like the ones in Ultra Paradise, would have made it stand out even more. Rose flavors can be tricky to pull off, and it’s rare for energy drinks to maintain a strong floral flavor. Σ(´∀`;)
Mixing Ultra Red and Zero Ultra to Make Pink
I thought some people might try mixing Ultra Red and Zero Ultra to make a pink drink, so I decided to give it a try myself for an honest review. (;´∀`)
By mixing about 5:1, with more Zero Ultra and just a little Ultra Red, you get this kind of pink. Can you tell which is Rosa and which is the mix?
The answer is that the left is Rosa, and the right is the mix of Ultra Red and Zero Ultra. While I didn’t expect the flavors to be similar, I tried to match the colors as closely as possible. Let’s taste it.
Since the white and red mix has more white, it obviously tastes mostly like Zero Ultra. The tartness from Ultra Red adds an interesting touch, and it’s surprisingly good. It tastes pretty nice. But of course, even though it’s pink, it didn’t taste exactly like Ultra Rosa.
After tasting Ultra Rosa again, I was reminded that it has a soft, sweet candy-like fruity taste, which I really appreciate. It’s amazing that it’s zero sugar.
At first, I thought I didn’t need Ultra Rosa if I already had Zero Ultra or Ultra Red, but after comparing the red-white mix, red, white, and pink, I realized that the sweetness of Ultra Rosa really stands out, and I can appreciate it more now.
However, I feel like the individual impact of Ultra Rosa might be a bit weak. With so many other flavors in the Ultra series, it would be great if it had a stronger presence. Something like a rose flavor or a bitter pink grapefruit flavor would have been exciting.
