Upon opening, the scent that bursts out is more of a standard grape soda aroma rather than a complex fruit blend.

Taking a sip, you first experience the distinctive sweetness of Zero Ultra (White Monster), followed by a balanced tartness and a subtle hint of grape. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the Ultra series—a grape flavor built upon the Ultra signature taste.

If you're familiar with the Ultra available in Japan, you might immediately recognize that it’s not just a typical grape flavor but an Ultra-style grape blend. You can really tell how they maintained the sweetness and character of Zero Ultra while incorporating grape.

That being said, when judged purely as a grape flavor, it’s hard to rate. The Ultra-specific taste dominates, making it different from your usual grape sodas. However, the fact that it’s so delicious despite being zero-zero is impressive (*´ｪ`*)

From my experience with various grape-flavored zero-zero energy drinks, they often struggle to mask the taste of artificial sweeteners, with acidity that tends to feel cheap.

That’s why ULTRA VIOLET stands out—it cleverly uses the Zero Ultra base to divert attention from any artificial aftertaste. The mild grape aroma and tartness add just enough dimension to prevent the flavor from feeling flat. While it’s not a pure grape soda, as an Ultra-series grape edition, it scores a perfect 100.

If you get the chance to try it, I don’t recommend drinking it at room temperature. Since it’s a zero-zero drink, it’s best enjoyed ice-cold. In the summer, adding plenty of ice will make the Ultra and grape flavors even more refreshing and absolutely delicious (ｕ_ｕ*)

Subtle Differences in Flavor Across Countries

UK Version of MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA VIOLET
This is the UK version of ULTRA VIOLET, released in 2018. Instead of the eerie purple, it has a more pinkish hue.

The color change also affects the taste—it has a stronger sweet-tart note, almost reminiscent of strawberries.

With such a difference in color, the mysterious appeal of the U.S. version is lost. If your first experience with ULTRA VIOLET was in the U.S., you’d get a rich grape taste with a captivating violet shade, but if your first encounter was in the UK...

In 2018, Germany also released its own ULTRA VIOLET.

This one also leans toward pink. At this point, the name "Violet" is only reflected in the can design rather than the drink itself (^_^;)

Monster Energy is sold worldwide, but as you can see, flavors, colors, and even aromas can vary by country. If you travel, picking up different versions for comparison can be a fun experience.

Energy Ingredients of MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA VIOLET

Contains 140mg of caffeine, along with taurine and carnitine. Interestingly, the caffeine content is lower than Japan’s 355ml version.

There’s no guarana or ginseng, keeping the formula simple. It’s always fascinating to see how Monster adjusts its energy blends across different products—be sure to check the label whenever a new release comes out!

The signature Ultra-series textured surface is adorned with intricate silver engravings that have a mystical, almost psychedelic feel. A wizard, perhaps? The design pairs perfectly with the deep purple base.

On the other side, a hooded skull appears. The combination of the eerie design, the violet can, and the murky purple liquid inside creates a perfectly cohesive, artistic masterpiece.

The tab follows the U.S. Ultra series standard—black tab with a silver top. Later, a version with a purple top was introduced. Both are stunning.

Originally launched in the U.S., MONSTER ENERGY ULTRA VIOLET later expanded to Canada, and by 2018, it was available across Europe due to its popularity. Will this trend continue and bring it to Japan? Let’s hope so!
