Mother EPIC SWELL

Mother EPIC SWELL, released at BP gas stations in Australia in late 2019 as a limited edition, became available nationwide in April 2020 and was subsequently made a regular product.

This is the second apple-flavored drink in the Mother series. However, it seems that the intent was not to have it coexist with the previous apple flavor, but rather to replace it with this Mother EPIC SWELL. I will explain this in more detail later.

The refreshing sweetness and the fragrant apple essence are very similar to North America's ROCKSTAR REVOLT KILLER APPLE POMME and Sonic Energy Drink. Unlike sour apple flavors, this one highlights the deliciousness and fragrance of apple.

Apple Flavors in Australia

As of 2020, in Australia, besides Mother EPIC SWELL, the only other apple-flavored energy drink was ROCKSTAR SUPER SOURS GREEN APPLE. However, the Australian version of SUPER SOURS GREEN APPLE has a distinctive, off-putting bitterness that makes it undrinkable. As a result, Mother EPIC SWELL emerged as the savior of apple flavors, becoming the ultimate apple flavor with no need to buy anything else.

Comparing the Old and New Apple Flavors in the Mother Series

Now let's compare Mother KICKED APPLE, which was discontinued in 2020, with Mother EPIC SWELL.

When placed side by side, you can’t help but marvel at the beautiful color combinations of both. The aromas of both are apple-based, but they are completely different. KICKED APPLE has a distinct sourness that you can clearly smell.

There’s no need for a comparison, as the two apple flavors are completely different. The older KICKED APPLE had a strong acidity, leaving a lingering sour green apple flavor.

In contrast, EPIC SWELL features a sweet and gentle apple flavor, making it much more drinkable. Especially when compared to KICKED APPLE’s intense acidity, the mildness of EPIC SWELL stands out.

Both are excellent apple flavors, and it’s hard to say one is better than the other, but I prefer the newer EPIC SWELL. Its deliciousness makes it easy to finish a 500ml can without getting bored, and it’s outstanding in terms of flavor balance.

When Mother EPIC SWELL was released, there was a question of whether it could coexist with KICKED APPLE, given they were both apple-flavored. Ultimately, KICKED APPLE was discontinued.

When Mother EPIC SWELL was first released in 2019, it was sold exclusively at BP gas stations. At the time, when I went hunting in Sydney, I never imagined it would be the product to replace Mother KICKED APPLE. I thought it was just another store-exclusive item. Click here for my Sydney trip.

With over 70g of carbohydrates, it's important not to overconsume, but... I think many people will get hooked on this delicious apple flavor.

Design of Mother EPIC SWELL

While I've thought that the Mother series could improve its design, the Mother EPIC SWELL design evokes the beautiful Australian coastline, so I think it's perfectly suited.

Origin of Mother EPIC SWELL

The discontinuation of Mother KICKED APPLE likely occurred because of a trademark dispute with V Energy over the V Green branding, which the Mother series lost. The legal battle, lasting eight years, ended in 2020. Mother EPIC SWELL was released shortly before the verdict in 2019.

For more details on the V vs. Mother Green dispute, I’ve written about it in the review of Mother KICKED APPLE. During the case, Mother KICKED APPLE, which used a similar green color to V, was likely pulled from the market. It’s my speculation that Mother EPIC SWELL was prepared as a replacement before the court’s decision.
