MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast
Released as a limited edition in June 2022, and again in June 2023, the "MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast."
"Baja Blast" is not a unique flavor of MTN DEW ENERGY, but rather one of Mountain Dew's traditional flavors with a 20-year history.
To briefly touch on the history of Baja Blast, it first appeared in 2004 as an exclusive flavor available only at Taco Bell in the U.S.
It quickly became a huge hit as a lime tropical flavor that pairs well with Mexican cuisine. Ten years later, in 2014, the flavor was released as a limited-edition bottled product at retail stores across the U.S., and it was well-received once again. After several more limited-edition releases, the flavor finally debuted in 2022 as part of Mountain Dew’s energy drink series, which is the version I’m reviewing here: "MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast."

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast
Upon opening the can, a refreshing tropical candy aroma bursts out. The color is a transparent green, which is not the typical tropical fruit color. Let's take a sip.
As I take a sip, the mouthfeel is light, with a mild sweetness and acidity, reminiscent of a tropical fruit candy. The aftertaste is light, with a refreshing lime tartness and fragrance that lingers in the nose.
Baja Blast is described as a "Tropical Lime Mix Flavor," but it lacks a strong fruitiness or pulp, offering a rather light taste.
In general, the MTN DEW ENERGY series is known for its light flavor profile with minimal sugar. Because of this, Baja Blast also doesn't leave a rich impression in terms of flavor complexity.
This refreshing taste, originally available only at Taco Bell, is perfect for washing down junk Mexican food. It was expected to become a permanent flavor in 2023, but it was announced in January 2024 that the MTN DEW ENERGY brand would be discontinued. From 2024 onward, Baja Blast will return to being a flavor within the original Mountain Dew series, so if you're interested, you can search for Mountain Dew in the U.S.
Energy Ingredients of MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast
It contains 180mg of caffeine, 5g of carbohydrates, no added sugars, and 5% white grape juice.
Design of MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast
The design combines the emerald green theme color of Baja Blast with the MTN DEW ENERGY logo, making it instantly recognizable as a Baja Blast energy drink.
At the bottom of the can, there is a flavor logo that evokes the image of waves.
This wave logo is not only used on the MTN DEW ENERGY cans reviewed here, but also on the main MTN DEW product cans, bottles, and other related product packaging. It looks pretty cool, doesn't it?
On the back of the can, there is a campaign for Taco Bell gift cards, letting you feel the Taco Bell origin of Baja Blast.
PepsiCo announced that the MTN DEW ENERGY series would be discontinued in 2024. Unfortunately, this MTN DEW ENERGY Baja Blast will be the last flavor in the MTN DEW ENERGY line.
