Flavor of November: Lithuania Bans Energy Drink Sales to Minors

Lithuania has decided to ban the sale of energy drinks to individuals under the age of 18, starting in November 2014. This marks the first prohibition of its kind among EU member states since energy drinks began to be viewed as a potential health risk.

Definition of Energy Drinks in Lithuania

  • Contains at least 150mg of caffeine per liter
  • Includes glucuronolactone, guarana, or taurine
  • Non-alcoholic beverage

Red Bull, for example, contains 320mg of caffeine per liter. These regulations are quite strict.

Purchasing Energy Drinks

  • Identification must be presented upon request
  • Proxy purchases for minors are illegal

It almost feels like the regulations for tobacco.

Reason for the Energy Drink Sales Ban

The main reason cited for the ban is the growing concern that "caffeine addiction and energy drink consumption may lead to the use of stronger stimulants, such as illegal drugs."

The energy drink industry has protested, questioning whether "other caffeine-containing products like coffee and chocolate should also be considered a gateway to illegal drugs." However, despite these objections, the ban on energy drink sales will take effect in November 2014. Lithuania has expressed hopes that this movement will spread across Europe.

In Europe, it is reported that 68% of individuals aged 10 to 18 regularly consume energy drinks. The age range is quite broad, so it would be interesting to see the breakdown by specific age groups. It’s also worth noting that energy drinks are not exactly cheap, making it surprising that 10-year-old children can afford them so easily.
