Will energy drink makers disappear from motorsport?

Posted on June 17, 2014 | Last updated February 21, 2025

Are Energy Drink Companies Facing the Same Fate as Tobacco Companies?

According to Asphalt and Rubber, energy drink companies may be forced to withdraw from motorsports sponsorships, just as tobacco companies did in the past.

Why the Withdrawal?

These factors have contributed to a growing perception that energy drinks are dangerous for young consumers. In the United States—one of the biggest markets for energy drinks—medical associations are lobbying for restrictions, and several states are already considering such measures. ∑(゚Д゚)ガーン

Advertising Bans and Sales Restrictions Could Lead to Sponsorship Withdrawals

Personally, I don’t think this will happen, but according to the Asphalt and Rubber article:

  • A ban on energy drink advertising → Companies can no longer operate as sponsors
  • A decline in sales → Even in countries where advertising is allowed, financial struggles may force sponsors to withdraw

Some people are asking, "What about coffee? Isn't that a dangerous drink too?"
Yet for some reason, Lithuania has already decided to ban sales of energy drinks to minors. If more countries follow suit, a decline in sales leading to sponsorship withdrawals could be a possibility.

That said, energy drinks have become a major global industry. If companies in the sector had done better lobbying, I don’t think such an unreasonable reason ("high caffeine concentration is dangerous") would have led to outright bans... (-_-;)

Soft drink manufacturers, including energy drink brands, are often targeted by strict lobbying efforts and protests over concerns like obesity. So, discussions like this are likely to continue in the future.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
