Energy drink market share in the US in 2014
TIME published the top energy drink market shares in the U.S. for 2014, based on data from Euromonitor. The data released may have some discrepancies from the actual numbers, but it gives a general overview of the market share for energy drink brands.
As expected, Red Bull was the top brand in 2014.
1st Place 43% Red Bull
As expected, Red Bull, the undisputed leader in global market share, remained strong.
In 2014, Red Bull released the Summer Edition as a limited-time offer, and at the beginning of 2015, it made a comeback as the Yellow Edition, adding three flavors to the Total Zero series: Orange, Cherry, and more.
These new products were mainly large-sized 355ml cans, reflecting the current trend in the U.S. with the expansion of the Zero series. The direction post-2015 is something to watch closely.
2nd Place 39% Monster Energy
Monster Energy has already caught up to Red Bull. Although it seems there hasn't been any major movement since the partnership with Coca-Cola, it will be interesting to see how much closer Monster can get to Red Bull's global market share.
In both 2014 and 2015, the Zero-based Ultra series was expanded, and new flavors of the low-calorie Rehab series were introduced. All of them had top-notch flavors.
3rd Place 10% Rockstar
Rockstar has been releasing a barrage of new flavors recently, but it hasn't shown significant growth, with a 10% market share. It felt like it could have been higher, but it seems the top two brands still dominate. Nonetheless, a 10% share in the U.S. energy drink market is an impressive figure, and Rockstar is undoubtedly a highly recognized and top-tier brand.
Energy drinks that are available everywhere remain powerful.
4th Place 3% NOS
NOS seems to have a loyal following in Japan, but its market share is relatively low. While it's available in many places, most energy drink consumers tend to gravitate toward the top 3 brands. When you see people drinking energy drinks in the streets, Red Bull is by far the most common, followed by Monster.
5th Place 3% AMP
AMP's sales seem to be slightly lower than NOS, placing it in this position. AMP is also commonly seen in stores, but it's often placed in less prominent spots, with only the main flavor and possibly one additional variety available. This helps explain its modest market share.
Other Energy Drinks
Below the top 5 are Full Throttle, XYIENCE, Arizona, Rip it, and Venom. Full Throttle is still relatively easy to find, but as you go down the list, availability decreases, especially in West Coast urban areas.
According to Euromonitor, the top 3 energy drinks in the U.S. are the same as the top 3 globally, and BURN, a major energy drink not sold in the U.S., is far behind Red Bull and Monster in market share. Had it been available in the U.S., the situation might have been different.

After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries.
