Energy drinks prices double as Saudi Arabia introduces selective tax
In Saudi Arabia, in an effort to curb the financial deterioration caused by falling oil prices, an excise tax has been introduced, causing the price of tobacco and energy drinks to double.
Excise Tax of 100% Imposed on Energy Drinks
The excise tax started on June 11, 2017. This tax applies a 100% rate on tobacco and energy drinks, while other soft drinks are subject to a 50% tax.
The original price of energy drinks is unclear, but if the already expensive drinks are now twice the price, will people still buy them? I personally wouldn't regularly drink a 400-500 yen bottle of juice in Japan... (´・ω・`)
On a side note, I should have stocked up on energy drinks while they were still affordable in Saudi Arabia!
Since alcohol is banned in Saudi Arabia, tobacco, carbonated drinks, and other indulgent items are quite popular. Considering that, the tax rate seems pretty bold.
Furthermore, after the introduction of excise taxes, Saudi Arabia will also implement a 5% VAT on certain goods starting in January next year.
The move to tax tobacco, energy drinks, and similar items is expected to be adopted in other countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
