Tsubu Energy: Flying Fish Energy Drink Debuts

Posted on January 25, 2018 | Last updated February 20, 2025

Tsubu Energy
Yaese Town, Okinawa Prefecture has developed a flying fish energy drink called "Tsubu Energy," made with the local specialty, flying fish. Currently, sampling is planned to be conducted at events held in Yaese Town, with a release scheduled for April 2018 and beyond.

Development of Tsubu Energy

The product name "Tsubu Energy" comes from the Okinawan dialect for flying fish, which is called "Tsubu." The product development was carried out in collaboration with Tomomatsu Beverage Co., Ltd., the same company behind the creation of "Kodomo Beer" and other products.

Tsubu EnergyThe energy ingredients include powdered dried flying fish, GABA, arginine, caffeine, and more. I wonder if the taste of the flying fish powder will come through... The press release mentions a unique flavor, so let's hope it doesn't end up being an unpalatable one.

The marine blue color is very Okinawan and looks great, and the clear bottle adds to the charm. It would have been nice if it were bottled leisurely in Okinawa, but it seems to be made in a factory in Saga, where Tomomatsu Beverage Co., Ltd. is located, which was a bit of a wake-up call from my dreamy thoughts!

Hope for General Sales and Canned Version

While the glass bottle is nice, I would be happier if it were available in cans for general sale. I think the logo would stand out well, so with proper branding and a good can design, it could be a great product. If there are designers from Yaese Town or from Yaese Town itself, it would be interesting to involve the local community in the creation process.

The glass bottle, which allows you to see the contents, makes it easy to convey the product's image, but with a can, you can enjoy the impact when pouring it into a glass after enjoying the can's design. Usually, by looking at the color and design of the can, you can imagine the color of the contents, but when you pour it out and think, "This is exactly the color! This color is amazing!" Energy drink lovers probably enjoy this moment a lot (*´ェ`*).

It would be even better if the taste of the drink were exceptional, like the local energy drink "Awarise." The release is scheduled for April 2018 and if it's available in Tokyo, I would love to try it.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
