Red Bull Launches 473ml Big Size in Japan! Calculating the Price per 100ml
On December 18, 2022, Red Bull finally released its 473ml can in Japan.

In Japan, the trend of larger energy drink sizes is progressing, and it seems Red Bull has expanded its range to offer a size comparable to other brands' big options.

The price of the Red Bull 473ml can is ¥316 (excluding tax), which becomes ¥341 with tax. It feels a bit pricey for everyday consumption.

The competitor, Monster Energy's 500ml bottle can, costs ¥297 (excluding tax), which becomes ¥320 with tax. Monster Energy offers more volume and the added convenience of a cap for portability, making it cheaper than Red Bull. That said, a 500ml can over ¥300 is not exactly cheap either.

Red Bull's 473ml can has slightly less volume and is about ¥20 more expensive than the Monster Energy bottle can. It would have been great if the price was a bit more competitive, but considering the difference is marginal, you might choose based on taste preference, mood, or brand loyalty.

Let's compare the prices of Red Bull in different sizes based on the price per 100ml at 7-Eleven.

  • 250ml: ¥191 (excluding tax), ¥76.4 per 100ml
  • 355ml: ¥245 (excluding tax), ¥69.0 per 100ml
  • 473ml: ¥316 (excluding tax), ¥66.8 per 100ml

The newly released 473ml can is about ¥10 cheaper per 100ml compared to the 250ml can. While the 473ml can is expensive for a carbonated drink, it reinforces how expensive the 250ml size is...

This isn't just a case for Japan; globally, Red Bull follows similar pricing trends. Fortunately, they have reduced prices across the board, which is a good thing.

Why does Red Bull have a 330ml bottle can, yet the 473ml can has no cap and uses the standard pull-tab can? This is a simple question.

The reason is that Red Bull, with a few exceptions, maintains consistent sizing worldwide.

The 330ml bottle can is distributed in the same shape worldwide, and the 473ml pull-tab can has been available in this format for a long time.

In contrast, Monster Energy's 500ml bottle can is unique to Japan and doesn't have a counterpart overseas. In Europe, for example, the 500ml can is considered a regular-sized can, not an oversized one, and is a standard pull-tab can.

The fact that Japan now has access to larger sizes of Red Bull, which were previously only available overseas, shows how much things have changed over time.

The larger size also comes with a slight increase in caffeine content, 151mg (32mg per 100ml), so be cautious not to overconsume energy drinks, coffee, tea, or other caffeinated beverages.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
