45 Types of Energy Drinks Recalled in Canada
A total of 45 types of energy drinks have been recalled in Canada. The reasons for the recall include exceeding the legally permitted caffeine content and failing to provide bilingual labeling in both English and French.
Most Recalled Energy Drinks Were Imported from Overseas
The majority of the recalled energy drinks were imported from the United States and are believed to have been sold through unofficial distribution channels without proper import procedures. The recall applies to both in-store and online sales.
Notable brands affected include Monster Energy, Red Bull, AriZona RX Energy, Boston America, Bang, Bucked Up, Celsius, C4, G Fuel, Ghost, and Mtn Dew Energy, among others.
Canada's Caffeine Regulations
Canada has a caffeine limit of 180mg per serving for energy drinks. Many of the recalled products exceed this limit, with some containing between 200mg and 300mg of caffeine.
Bilingual Labeling Requirement
Canadian regulations require product labels to be in both English and French, the country's two official languages. The recalled products did not meet this requirement, meaning they were being sold in Canada without proper localization.
Health Canada’s Statement
Health Canada stated: "Most of the recalled energy drinks were not manufactured in Canada, nor were they intended for sale in Canada. They were imported and sold by third parties."
As per this statement, any product that did not meet Canadian regulations was subject to recall. However, properly localized energy drinks that comply with Canadian regulations continue to be sold legally without issue.
Many of the recalled products are widely consumed in the United States, so it’s unlikely they pose any direct harm to Canadian consumers. However, given the already negative perception of energy drinks, selling them without following national regulations only reinforces a bad image.
