In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of BLACK ENERGY
When poured into a glass, the color is so brown that it almost looks like barley tea. I expected a deeper purple or even a nearly black hue, given the berry theme. The fact that it's non-carbonated makes it feel even more like barley tea or roasted tea.
The aroma isn't particularly strong, even after pouring it into a glass. However, when bringing the glass close to my nose, I can detect a natural grape scent.
The taste, however, is quite different from the natural grape aroma. Alongside bitterness and astringency, there's a noticeable sourness. Despite containing 10% fruit juice, the fruity flavors of grape and berries are unfortunately not very pronounced. Instead, the distinctively sweet-bitter taste of artificial sweeteners dominates, making the fruit juice content feel almost overshadowed.
Since it's non-carbonated, the taste of BLACK ENERGY is experienced in its rawest form, with the bitterness, astringency, and sourness lingering in the mouth without much change. If it had a more pronounced fruity sensation, it might have been more enjoyable as a berry-flavored drink, but that aspect is somewhat lacking here.
Adding plenty of ice helps to slightly mellow out the bitterness and astringency, giving it a hint of freshness. However, it also makes me wonder if the drink would have been better if it relied more on fruit juice and sugar to create a richer flavor.
Energy Ingredients of BLACK ENERGY
Contains 60mg of caffeine, 300mg of arginine, and a daily dose of multivitamins—fairly standard ingredient amounts.
It contains 10% fruit juice, made up of three types: grape, blueberry, and blackcurrant.
The sugar content is 23g, which is less than half of what you'd typically find in a 500ml energy drink. Instead, artificial sweeteners seem to be used for flavoring. Since it's non-carbonated, the artificial sweetener's distinct taste stands out even more. For a 500ml drink, I feel like adding around 50–60g of sugar could have made a difference.
Design of BLACK ENERGY
Following the RED version, it looks like this will become a color-themed energy drink series, which is pretty interesting.
Personally, I really like this design. If the liquid inside matched the packaging color more closely, it would create a stronger visual consistency when poured into a glass.
I wonder if making the flames and logo text purple would have helped maintain a more cohesive color theme. The strong red color stands out quite a bit, but maybe that’s just my personal preference. It’s a tricky balance. In the case of BURN energy drinks, the flame logo changes color depending on the flavor, so if this series continues, I’d love to see a more colorful flame design. Also, the fact that the "BLACK ENERGY" text is outlined in red feels a bit off (^_^;)
That being said, this sharp design matches well with the square shape of the carton pack. I can’t help but hope for a new release with a richer and more flavorful taste. Since this seems to be a limited-run product rather than a permanent lineup, it's unclear whether improvements will be made and if the energy series will continue. Still, I’d love to see them experiment with different colors just for fun! lol
