D-Ribose
Deoxyribose
Deoxyribose is a monosaccharide, similar to glucose. D-ribose is used as a sweetener and also serves as a component for energy production.
It is known to be included in the Japanese version of Monster Energy. However, D-ribose is not included in Monster Energy products in the US and other countries.
Effects of D-ribose
- Helps utilize sugars and fats as energy sources
- Reduces fatigue and alleviates muscle pain
- Although it is a carbohydrate, it does not raise blood sugar levels
- Rapid absorption
D-ribose for Exercise
D-ribose promotes the generation of ATP, the energy source, and helps in the re-synthesis of ATP after it has been broken down for energy use. This process helps maintain continuous energy during exercise.
Additionally, D-ribose can be used for post-exercise care to reduce chronic fatigue and alleviate muscle pain by lowering oxidative levels.
Don’t Expect Much from D-ribose in Monster Energy
The amount of D-ribose in Monster Energy is 125mg per 100ml, which is about 443mg per can.
In studies on D-ribose, dosages of 5 to 10g are often used, and when taken as a supplement for exercise, 4 to 5g per serving is common. This shows just how small the amount of D-ribose in Monster Energy is. With this small amount, it is unlikely that you will feel any noticeable effects.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
