Posted on February 22, 2025|Last updated February 22, 2025

What is Erythritol?

Erythritol, also known as erythritol, is a natural sugar alcohol with almost no calories. It is absorbed very little in the intestines and is excreted as urine without raising blood sugar levels.

It is found in corn, fruits, and fermented foods. Erythritol is made by fermenting glucose and can produce sweetness that is about 80% of that of sugar.

Flavor and Effects of Erythritol

  • Almost no calories (0.2kcal per gram)
  • 80% of the sweetness of sugar
  • Provides a refreshing sensation

Erythritol is used as a zero-calorie sweetener in energy drinks. With only 0.2kcal per gram, it provides 80% of the sweetness of sugar with just 1/20 of the calories.

Energy drinks containing erythritol may also offer a refreshing cooling sensation, and it is used when a cooling effect is desired.

Erythritol is Safe with No Side Effects

Erythritol's safety has been confirmed by the FAO/WHO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives, and there is no established upper intake limit, making it extremely safe.

However, excessive intake can cause digestive issues like those caused by xylitol, such as diarrhea. But at the levels found in energy drinks, there is no problem, so you can drink them with peace of mind.

Author informationAuthor: Energy Drink-kun

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
