Inositol

Posted on February 22, 2025|Last updated February 22, 2025

What is Inositol?

Inositol, also known as inositol, is a "vitamin B-like substance" that has sweetness. It was once classified as a vitamin, but since it can be synthesized in the body and does not result in deficiency, it is no longer classified as a vitamin.

It is unlikely that people consume energy drinks specifically for the effects of inositol, but it has become a standard energy ingredient in major energy drink brands.

The amount of inositol varies by energy drink, so it is generally included as just one of the energy blend ingredients.

Effects of Inositol

  • Prevention of fatty liver, arteriosclerosis
  • Enhancement of fat metabolism, helping to use energy
  • Supporting nerve transmission and brain function

Anti-Fatty Liver Vitamin

Inositol is called the "anti-fatty liver vitamin" due to its ability to prevent fat accumulation in the liver. In energy drinks, which often contain large amounts of sugar, drinking them will still lead to weight gain even if inositol is included.

Smart Support

Inositol is also used as nourishment for the brain. The inositol included in energy drinks is likely included with this function in mind. However, the inclusion amount is so small that you will not feel any significant effect.

Inositol is used by some as a smart drug to help reduce anxiety and improve concentration. Many supplements include both inositol and choline, another essential brain nutrient.

Inositol has been used in cases of depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and ADHD.

For reference, the Now Foods supplement contains 500mg of inositol per capsule, which shows that the 50mg to 100mg found in energy drinks is unlikely to cause a significant effect. If you're looking to take inositol for brain health, using supplements is the better option.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
