Theanine
L-Theanine in Energy Drinks
L-theanine is one of the amino acids commonly found in tea. In terms of taste, it contributes to the umami flavor.
L-theanine is not a typical ingredient in energy drinks, but it can occasionally be found, especially in energy drinks that focus on brain-related effects rather than physical performance.
Effects of L-Theanine
- Relaxation effects
- Anti-stress properties
- Promotes better sleep
L-theanine is more commonly found in relaxation drinks rather than energy drinks, and indeed, it is nearly always included in relaxation-oriented beverages.
Studies have shown that L-theanine can improve memory and learning abilities, relieve stress and tension, and enhance concentration. For those who habitually consume energy drinks before workouts, the effects of L-theanine may prove beneficial.
It is said that L-theanine's relaxation effects are noticeable at 50mg for individuals with lower anxiety levels, and more noticeable at 200mg for individuals with higher anxiety tendencies.
Since energy drinks typically do not contain large amounts of L-theanine, it is best not to expect too much from its effects. In most cases, the more noticeable impact is the characteristic bitterness from L-theanine, which is often experienced in tea-flavored energy drinks. Enjoying the taste and atmosphere of these drinks might be the best approach, in my opinion.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
