PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP

Posted on December 15, 2024 | Last updated January 27, 2025

PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
This is my review of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP, released at the end of May 2024, with an orange creamsicle flavor.

The design has shifted from a simple flavor-color approach to one featuring a silhouette that clearly represents the flavor. This makes it easier to imagine the flavor even before you take a sip.

Orange cream has become a classic flavor in the zero-sugar fitness energy drink category. How has PRIME put its own spin on this flavor?!

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP

When I open the can, I’m hit with a sweet, candy-like ramune scent and a soft ice cream fragrance. It doesn’t immediately smell like orange, but what does it taste like? I’ll give it a try.
Flavor of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
Upon taking a sip, the flavor is a gentle, sweet and tangy orange paired with the creamy, sweet taste of ice cream.

The aftertaste is reminiscent of the candy-like ramune flavor I first smelled when opening the can, floating away as I finish the drink. The lingering scent isn’t of orange or sweet ice cream but instead has that powdery ramune candy flavor that only those familiar with it can recognize.

While the mild acidity makes it feel like an orange flavor, for those who can’t shake the ramune impression, it may come across more as a ramune flavor than an orange one. I’d call it a mild orange ramune flavor. The way the flavor lingers is particularly memorable for those who are familiar with the Japanese candy.

That said, just like the other PRIME ENERGY drinks, there’s no artificial sweetener taste at all, and the smooth orange and ice cream flavors create a surprisingly smooth mouthfeel, which doesn’t feel like a zero-sugar drink.

While there’s a sweet, soft, creamy ice cream flavor, I sense that many would rate this lower in terms of richness and creaminess compared to other orange creamsicle flavors. The orange flavor is present, but there may be those who prefer a more robust and creamy experience.

Other brands often have a stronger cream flavor, but conversely, PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP stands out because the orange flavor is well defined, and that might appeal to many. This will likely depend on personal preference.

Design of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP

Design of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
The can features an orange gradient, representing both the orange sorbet and the white ice cream inside.

Design of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
Not only is there the gradient, but also illustrations of ice cream, orange fruit, and clouds, all evoking a sense of sweet, creamy orange flavor.

Design of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
The areas with the silhouette have a textured finish.

The white PRIME logo also features this textured finish. This is the first time PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP has used this kind of special finish on the can.

Design of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
When the first five flavors of PRIME ENERGY were released, there was no specific design to evoke the flavor itself. The cans were simply color-coded to indicate the flavor.

Since then, three additional flavors have been introduced, and PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP marks the eighth flavor. Because its can color was similar to that of the standard flavor "PRIME ENERGY ORANGE MANGO," a gradient and flavor-inspired silhouette have been added to the design of the entire can.

Design of PRIME ENERGY DREAM POP
As the number of flavors grows, similar colors start to show up on store shelves, making it harder to distinguish between products. It was a smart move to introduce a design that expresses the product’s unique characteristics at this stage when the number of flavors is still relatively low.

Red Bull hasn’t been able to do this even after nearly 10 years... I’m looking forward to seeing how the design of new PRIME ENERGY flavors will evolve and whether they can continue to introduce more staple flavors.
