In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Safe Daily Caffeine Intake
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and Health Canada state that up to 400mg of caffeine per day (equivalent to 3 cups of coffee) is safe for healthy adults without adverse health effects.
Based on the recommended 400mg of caffeine per day, I’ve compiled a list of how many cans of major energy drinks sold in Japan are considered safe to consume per day.
How Many Cans of Red Bull Can You Drink in One Day?
One 250ml can of Red Bull contains 80mg of caffeine.
For healthy adults, it seems safe to drink up to 5 cans per day. If you’ve been concerned about drinking 2 cans of Red Bull per day, don’t worry, that amount doesn’t pose a significant caffeine risk.
How Many Cans of Monster Energy Can You Drink in One Day?
One 355ml can of Monster Energy contains 142mg of caffeine.
For healthy adults, 2 cans per day seems to be fine. There are occasional questions online asking, "Is it okay to drink 2 cans of Monster Energy in one day?" and for healthy adults, the answer is no problem.
How Many Cans of ZONe Energy Can You Drink in One Day?
ZONe comes in two versions: one with 150mg of caffeine and another with 75mg of caffeine.
For the 150mg version, you can safely drink up to 2 cans per day, and for the 75mg version, up to 5 cans. However, consuming 5 cans (2.5L) would raise concerns about excessive sugar intake, which is more of an issue than caffeine.
Consider the Sugar Intake from Energy Drinks for Your Health
Energy drinks contain sugar levels comparable to soft drinks like cola. ZONe, for example, comes in large 500ml cans, and while it has relatively low caffeine, it contains a high amount of sugar. It’s dangerous to judge how many cans you can safely drink based solely on caffeine content.
It’s important to consider your daily meals and activity level to ensure you don’t consume excessive carbohydrates. While sugar may not have immediate harmful effects like caffeine, prolonged overconsumption can lead to obesity, which in turn can contribute to lifestyle diseases.
