RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER

Posted on April 12, 2020 | Last updated February 8, 2025

RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER
In 2020, after three years, RAIZIN returned to the energy drink market with a new release, RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER. This drink contains zero caffeine, zero calories, and zero sugar, featuring an ingredient called "Enekisutora."

※In October 2021, the packaging was redesigned to match RAIZIN GOLD FREE. However, the contents remain the same as the original FRUITY THUNDER. Details about the updated version are included at the end of this review, so be sure to read through to the end.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER

RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER
At first, I expected the drink to have a colorful appearance, but it turned out to be a dull ochre. The color doesn’t give off a fruity vibe, which feels like a missed opportunity, especially since the can itself is a vibrant blue.

Taking a sip, I found that it had RAIZIN’s signature ginger essence but in a milder form, combined with an artificial fruity candy-like flavor. The aroma is quite unique, with a subtle chemical-like scent lingering in the nose.

If you take your time to savor it, the chemical notes become more noticeable. However, despite being sugar-free and calorie-free, it doesn’t taste thin or lacking. The artificial sweetener is barely detectable, making it an easy drink even for those who usually dislike artificial sweetness. Considering it’s a zero-sugar, zero-calorie drink, it does a surprisingly good job of maintaining a pleasant sweetness and aroma.

After drinking, I noticed a lingering tingling sensation on my tongue, likely from the ginger. This spicy sensation stays for quite a while, refusing to fade away quickly.

Personally, I’m sensitive to spiciness, so I found the combination of this tingling ginger heat and the sweet fruity candy flavor a bit puzzling… But how about you?

Energy Ingredients of RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER

RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER
RAIZIN’s 2020 release is characterized by zero caffeine, zero calories, and zero sugar.

Instead of caffeine, it contains something called "Enekisutora," which includes galangal extract. Galangal is a plant from the ginger family, known for its similar effects to ginger. RAIZIN continues to stay committed to ginger-based ingredients.

Design of RAIZIN FRUITY THUNDER

The vibrant blue gradient is stunning. It stands out on store shelves alongside RAIZIN HARD GINGER. The glossy can, combined with the white-outlined logo and text, gives off a clean and refreshing feel—though the flavor itself isn’t exactly refreshing.

When RAIZIN transitioned from an energy drink to a carbonated beverage targeted at office workers in 2017, it adopted a white square logo mark. This design is said to represent a chart of "flavor perception" and "stimulation."

The back of the can features the "Enekisutora" logo. Since this ingredient is unfamiliar to most consumers, it serves as the defining energy component of the new RAIZIN lineup.

However, having a unique ingredient doesn’t necessarily make an energy drink appealing. I’m curious how consumers perceive the decision to replace caffeine with ginger-based "Enekisutora."

Packaging Redesign in October 2021

I happened to notice the redesigned packaging while visiting a convenience store. The left can in the image is the newly updated FRUITY THUNDER.

Compared to the previous version, the new design has a softer look. It seems they’ve aligned it with the design of RAIZIN GOLD FREE. The previous vibrant style has been toned down, giving it a calmer appearance. Will future RAIZIN releases follow this color scheme?

The contents remain the same as the original FRUITY THUNDER. However, the liquid’s color is still underwhelming. When poured into a glass, it has the deep brown shade of strong barley tea or a nutritional tonic. It would’ve been more striking if the bright blue can matched the drink’s actual color.

Trying it again after a long time, I found that the tingling ginger spice is still there. For someone like me who isn’t great with spicy flavors, it feels quite strong. The artificial fruity notes, combined with the lingering ginger heat and an overall chemical-like taste, make it lean towards the typical energy drink profile.

Even though the can now has a fresh, refined look, the drink inside still maintains RAIZIN’s signature herbal energy drink vibe.
