RAIZIN Energy Drink Taisho Pharmaceutical Version
The RAIZIN energy drink, released by Raizin Japan, has been re-released by its parent company, Taisho Pharmaceutical, in this 250ml version of RAIZIN.
When you think of Raizin, you think of the intense spiciness from ginger, which is its signature flavor. In the past, it came in a mini can, and finishing it was quite a challenge. This time, it's in a 250ml can, so I'm a bit concerned about whether I can finish the whole thing...

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of RAIZIN Taisho Pharmaceutical Version
Upon opening, the distinct pungency of ginger from RAIZIN bursts out.
The color is a calm amber, quite different from the previous version.
First, I brought it closer to my glass to check the scent. At that moment, the ginger's sharpness immediately attacked my nasal membranes, and I couldn't stop sneezing. The carbonation is quite strong, so the bubbles popping on the surface make the aroma feel almost like a weapon.
When I tasted it, the base wasn’t the spiciness, but rather sweetness ( ゚д゚)ハッ!
It has a very sweet taste, almost like a thick candy or fruit liqueur (though there’s no fruity flavor), with a velvety mouthfeel. The sweetness is pretty strong.
Then the spiciness from the ginger kicks in, spreading heat quickly.
As I drank it, the ginger’s spiciness lingered in my throat, so those who aren't fond of spicy ingredients might find it a bit much. (^_^;)
Design of RAIZIN Taisho Pharmaceutical Version
Personally, I think the new design is better than the old one. Just like before, it features a diagonal lightning-like line, but the surface finish is different on either side. The left side has a matte finish with a pear-skin texture, while the right side has a shiny, reflective surface. Both are silver and look cool.
On the front-right side, there's an illustration of the "Eagle Mark RAIZIN Version."
This part is fine in isolation, but when you look at the whole can, it gives off a bit of a cheap impression, which is a little disappointing. Personally, I think they could’ve skipped the illustration. The product description is clean and in black English text, which looks really nice and simple.
If they had just added some patterns or designs and cleaned up the typography, the can would have been quite cool. Looking at Rockstar’s recent designs, they seem to handle that sort of thing well.
Energy Ingredients of RAIZIN Taisho Pharmaceutical Version
The caffeine content isn't listed, but it’s 36mg, with no other prominent ingredients. There’s ginger extract and spice extracts, which make the drink spicy, even though it’s tempered by the sweetness. The sugar content is similar to other energy drinks, and it also contains sucralose. The sweetness seems stronger than before, which might be because of this.
It says it’s highly carbonated, but because the sweetness and thickness have increased, it didn’t feel overwhelmingly strong—just the right amount.
Has RAIZIN Become Less Spicy?
So, how much has the flavor changed?
I compared the old RAIZIN (from Raizin Japan) and the new one (from Taisho Pharmaceutical).
On the left is the old RAIZIN from Raizin Japan, and on the right is the new RAIZIN from Taisho Pharmaceutical.
Color Difference
The color is completely different. The old version is yellow, like a vitamin drink, while the new version is amber, similar to Monster Energy. The difference is striking when you compare them side by side. The old version looks cheap, with a yellow color that seems like a quick afterthought.
Flavor Difference
The old RAIZIN was just intensely spicy ginger drink. There was almost no sweetness, and it wasn’t something to savor—it was simply spicy. The liquid was also thin, so it left a burning sensation in the throat.
On the other hand, the new RAIZIN has a much better balance between the strong sweetness and spiciness, so the heat doesn’t feel as painful. When served i
