Real Gold Y

On May 16, 2022, Real Gold released two new flavors in collaboration with YOSHIKI: "Real Gold X" and "Real Gold Y." I was given the opportunity to review these products before their official release.

I never expected Real Gold to release a 500ml can, nor did I think they would collaborate with YOSHIKI to launch two different flavors...

Flavor of Real Gold Y

When opening the can, a bitter citrus fruit scent with a hint of fruit pulp bursts out. Personally, this is the kind of scent that really excites me.

When poured into a glass, the color is more elegant and subdued blue than I had imagined. This shade is common in EU energy drinks.

Now, let's take a sip and hope the flavor doesn't lose to the scent.

When you take a sip, a mix of exotic fruits like lime, grapefruit, papaya, and dragon fruit spreads across your palate with a sweet and floral flavor.

There’s no real fruitiness in the taste itself, but the fragrance is excellent, and you can clearly enjoy the exotic fruit character. The bitter fruit scent and floral taste combine in a way that keeps things interesting throughout, and since it’s not a thick, heavy flavor, the 500ml size feels just right.

I didn’t expect such a well-balanced flavor and scent from the Real Gold series. Before trying it, I thought, "A 500ml can is too much, I won't be able to finish it... Just because it’s a large size doesn’t mean it’s good." But Real Gold Y pleasantly surprised me in the best possible way.

Since this is a "YOSHIKI collaboration product," I’m not sure how much YOSHIKI himself contributed to the flavor, but the result is a surprisingly well-executed flavor that aligns with his sophisticated and refined image.

Energy Ingredients of Real Gold Y

It contains 150mg of caffeine, 375mg of arginine, theanine, and spice extracts. Theanine has relaxing and focus-enhancing properties, and Real Gold Y’s product concept revolves around concentration, playing a classic tune.

Design of Real Gold Y

The mysterious blue light and the blue stone, almost like stained glass, give off a beautiful atmosphere.

The simple design with the large "Y" from the product name only makes sense when "Real Gold X" and "Real Gold Y" are displayed together.

It can be interpreted as referring to the "XY chromosomes" or "X JAPAN's YOSHIKI," and if it’s about the "coordinate axis," the next product could be expected.

On the front of the can, there’s YOSHIKI’s face. The design reminds me of the American Steven Seagal energy drink, and when a famous person’s face is that prominent on the front, it gives off a celebrity merchandise vibe. Well, it might actually be just that, but... the taste turned out to be surprisingly good.

That said, the poem on the back is much more impactful because it’s YOSHIKI himself delivering the message, with the catchphrase "NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE." The balance of YOSHIKI's face here is good, and the message feels authentic coming from him.

The can features a blue tab that matches the design and color of the can. This color-matching tab is quite rare in Japanese energy drinks.

The can shape of the sample I reviewed differs from the final product. On the right is the sample version, and on the left is the official version. For enthusiasts, this shape is particularly beautiful. Real Gold really did something special here.

Initially, I was unsure about a 500ml can size paired with a celebrity collaboration, but after trying it, I was amazed by the refined, complex flavors that exceeded my expectations. It turned out to be a flavor I never imagined from the previous Real Gold series, and I enjoyed it until the very last drop.

It’s also fun to compare which flavor you prefer between the simultaneously released Real Gold X and this one. As for me, I’m definitely a Real Gold Y fan.

September 2022 Update: Missing Sweetener Sucralose

On June 7, 2022, Coca-Cola announced the omission of sucralose, a sweetener that should have been listed in the ingredients of Real Gold Y.

It was discovered that some ingredients were omitted from the ingredient list of the 500ml can of "Real Gold Y." Please check below for further details.

After learning of this issue, we immediately reported it to the relevant authorities, consulted with them on the necessary actions, and made an announcement on our website to ensure the correct labeling. Please rest assured that the taste and quality of the product remain unaffected, and it is safe and enjoyable to drink.

No recall was issued, and the product was gradually replaced in stores. After this announcement in June, I was searching for a version of Real Gold Y with the sucralose listed, and by the end of September, I finally found it!

On the left is the version without sucralose, and on the right is the version with sucralose listed after the June discovery. It took quite a while... Although there were stores that replaced the stock earlier, I had trouble finding it in Tokyo and Osaka.

お疲れ様です。
本日購入したY缶ですが、自分が住んでるところではサンプル版の缶（形状）が並んでました。
味や香りについてはこちらのレビューを見る前はライムとスペアミントとレモングラスを使ってるのかな？と思いましたが、レビューされてる通りだと思います。ただ、ライムが強すぎて後続のフレーバーがかなり弱く感じます。（個人的には苦手なので★評価少ないです。）
