In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Red Bull Orange Edition Tasting Review

Upon opening the can, a refreshing citrus scent fills the air. Right away, I could tell this was different from the Orange Edition released overseas. The international versions of the Orange Edition were somewhat disappointing in terms of flavor...

When you take a sip, a pleasant tartness and refreshing orange pulp flavor fill your mouth, offering a citrusy taste that is very much characteristic of Japan.

Unlike the artificial juice taste of the overseas Orange Edition, this Japanese version features a more authentic citrus orange flavor, making it a uniquely Japanese flavor. Honestly, the international versions had a cheap taste that didn't feel like Red Bull, but the Japanese version delivers the flavor of real orange pulp, and I personally rate it highly.

The "deliciousness that feels like it has juice, even though it doesn't" is one of the signature qualities of the Edition series, which has been released every year in the U.S. since 2014. I believe the Japanese Orange Edition faithfully reproduces this quality.

This time, it is an "Iyokan flavor." The sweetness is restrained, and it doesn’t linger too long on the tongue. The tanginess and slight astringency perfectly capture the essence of Japan's Iyokan citrus. By the way, the Japanese Yellow Edition has also been modified with yuzu to create a unique tropical flavor, and it’s delicious too, so I recommend you try it as well.

The Orange Edition was first released in the U.S. in 2016, a whole six years ago (and frankly, it wasn’t that great). If it had tasted exactly like the original, I would have been thoroughly disappointed.

Red Bull Japan did a fantastic job of localizing the orange flavor, which can often be cheap-tasting, and made it into a high-quality product, staying true to the deliciousness of the Edition series. I’m excited to see what new products they will release in the future.

Energy Ingredients of Red Bull Orange Edition

Red Bull Orange Edition Sunrise Spark
Contains 80mg of caffeine and 300mg of arginine. It’s free from fruit juice. The caffeine content isn’t too high, so there’s no need to worry about overconsumption.

Design of Red Bull Orange Edition

Red Bull Orange Edition Sunrise Spark
The Japanese version of the Orange Edition features a matte finish, which gives it a premium feel, much like the Edition series releases in recent years. As this is a limited edition, the can has the "LIMITED EDITION" line at the top.

The flavor name area also includes the uniquely Japanese abstract word "Sunrise Spark."

Here’s a comparison of the Orange Edition from the U.S., Japan, and Italy.

It’s not obvious in the photo, but when compared to the glossy surface of the overseas Orange Edition, the matte finish adds a touch of luxury to the silver parts. The "Sunrise Spark" section on the Japanese can isn’t silver but white, making it stand out against the orange background.

Japanese Red Bull is often thought to come in smaller sizes, but the Edition series is typically 250ml, with the 355ml size only available in North America. The charm of the Edition series is to enjoy its unique flavor in this limited quantity. As the Japanese Orange Edition is a limited release, I recommend securing it early if you enjoy the taste.
