Red Bull Organics Simply Cola

Posted on June 3, 2018 | Last updated February 14, 2025

Red Bull Organics Simply Cola
This is the Japan-exclusive Red Bull Organics Simply Cola, launched in the Kanto region. It’s an organic cola made with 100% organic ingredients, created as part of Red Bull's organic product line. In this review, I’ll also be comparing it to the American Simply Cola, which was made with all-natural ingredients and produced in 2008.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Weak Cola Flavor Punch

The moment you open the can, the cola scent spreads quickly due to the carbonation. Unlike Coca-Cola or Pepsi, it has a candy-like cola gummy scent.

Red Bull Organics Simply Cola
It has a reddish cola color. When poured into a glass, yellow foam spreads up impressively.

The first impression upon drinking is a mild sweetness with a cola flavor that lacks punch. The aftertaste leaves the distinct cola acidity, but it feels like it’s missing that refreshing sensation. The cola scent is noticeable every time you bring the glass to your lips, but the flavor doesn’t match the scent—it’s all very subtle, which makes the taste feel out of sync with the aroma (-_-;)

The carbonation is much weaker than expected, especially given the foam that rises when poured into the glass. It feels like drinking cola that’s lost its fizz.

The best way to enjoy this is chilled in the fridge. If you add ice, the flavor quickly dissipates, much like the Monster Energy Cuba Libre. If you want to taste the original flavor of Simply Cola, I wouldn’t recommend adding ice (;´∀`)

What you expect from a cola will vary, but personally, I enjoy a strong carbonation with a richer sweetness and a crisp, refreshing aftertaste. I like a balance of strong flavor and a sense of refreshment. Even if the flavor becomes more refreshing with ice, I prefer when the overall satisfaction doesn't drop. Therefore, I found the Organic Simply Cola a bit lacking.

Red Bull Organics Simply Cola Ingredients

The entire Organics series is made with organic ingredients. It contains caffeine, but the amount isn't listed.

The sugar used is organic, and the caffeine as well. The ingredients include caffeine, lemon, ginger, lime, vanilla, Amakusa (Japanese seaweed), galangal, cinnamon, kola nuts, cocoa, orange, cardamom, mint, pineapple, nutmeg, and cloves, among others.

Here’s the pamphlet that came in the non-sale Organic special box. It contains a variety of ingredients.

Since it's produced in Switzerland, it also has the EU organic certification logo.

Comparison of Old and New Red Bull Simply Cola

Finally, the moment has come. Until recently, the European Red Bull Simply Cola was available, but for enthusiasts, the American Simply Cola is something worth trying. When lined up, the old Simply Cola design is more immediately recognizable as "Red Bull," which is ideal for retail displays.

The American Simply Cola was produced around 2008 and has already been discontinued for over 10 years, making it difficult to find. Luckily, I have a few cans, so this time, I’ll compare the new Organic Simply Cola made only with organic ingredients to the American Simply Cola made with all-natural ingredients.

The color is almost identical. The carbonation also remains strong, much like the freshly produced Organic Simply Cola. Since it’s in a can, as long as there’s no leakage, the fizz stays intact.

The difference is in how the foam behaves. After pouring into a glass, the foam in the Japanese Simply Cola disappears, while the American Simply Cola’s foam remains creamy. There’s some variation depending on the can, but if the foam is still creamy in older cans, that’s a bit concerning (;´∀`)

The taste was indeed different. The Japanese Simply Cola has a mild, subtle sweetness and acidity, lacking the punch. The American version, while also mild in sweetness, has a stronger cola acidity and a more pronounced bitterness. This might be due to aging, but there’s a noticeable difference in flavor intensity.

Upon tasting both, I feel that the Organic Simply Cola was intentionally made with a more subdued flavor to emphasize the organic product feel. It's gentle, well-rounded, and easier to drink. Although the previous Natural Cola was somewhat similar in direction, this time, the difference in taste was quite significant.

By the way, the Natural and Organic formulas share some ingredients, but the Coca leaf is present only in the American and other European versions of the Natural Cola. Since this ingredient generally receives negative feedback, there's no real need to include it.

As for which is easier to drink, the Organic version is definitely more appealing. However, it lacks enough punch, so when chilled, it just feels like "drinking something sweet" and loses the expected satisfaction.

I think most people expect the strong flavor of the original Red Bull when drinking this, and so they might find the Simply Cola "disappointingly mild."

The Organic tab color is silver. The American version has a red tab on the left. Nowadays, both the Red and Blue Editions are available, so if they had used a colored tab here, it might have added more character to the experience.
