The strong blueberry-like aroma and vibrant purple color make it hard to believe this could be sugar-free. But how does it actually taste? Let's drink it and find out.

Upon sipping, I'm amazed at the rich sweetness, reminiscent of grape, and it completely surprises me that this could be sugar-free. Typically, sugar-free Red Bull products have an overwhelming artificial sweetener taste, but this one is the opposite.

It beautifully masks the usual unpleasant aftertaste of artificial sweeteners, reaching a level of taste that almost feels like a regular sugary drink. The balance of sweetness and acidity from the berry flavor is excellent, and the aftertaste lingers with the berry’s taste and aroma—truly impressive!

Especially for those who dislike the taste of artificial sweeteners, the aftertaste is significantly minimized, making this drink feel almost miraculous.

Interestingly, whether consumed at room temperature, chilled, or with ice, the sweetness level feels just like a sugared drink, making it a perfect refreshment.

Despite being discontinued in 2018, this drink is a perfect example of how a sugar-free product can exceed expectations. However, its sales performance was likely poor, and it might have been challenging for regular consumers, like me, to switch to sugar-free options after being used to sugary versions.

Energy Ingredients of RED BULL PURPLE EDITION SUGARFREE

Contains 114mg of caffeine and 1320mg of taurine. While it’s sugar-free, it still has 15kcal, so it’s not a “total zero” product.

Design of RED BULL PURPLE EDITION SUGARFREE

The purple can features the distinctive sugar-free design with light blue “SUGARFREE” text, and a diagonal cut revealing the shiny silver underneath—this became the signature design for Red Bull’s sugar-free edition series.

When first released in 2017, the can did not have the blue "SUGARFREE" label at the top. This simple design was changed two months later, and the more recognizable sugar-free label was introduced. You can read more about it in our news article from that time.

After the product was discontinued in the U.S., the same purple edition was later released as full-sugar versions under the names Summer Edition, Purple Edition, and Acai Edition in Brazil and Europe.

Interestingly, the sugar-free version made a comeback in select European countries years after its initial discontinuation.

It's fascinating to see how energy drink brands evolve and how flavors can come back after time.
