In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Red Bull TOTAL ZERO Cherry edition

When opened, you can enjoy the sweet scent of cherry, light and refreshing. The typical cherry-flavored drinks usually have a rich, flavorful aroma that you can almost taste right away, but this Cherry Edition, being part of the Total Zero line, has a much more subdued fragrance.

When poured into a glass, the scent is much stronger than expected, and the cherry color is quite prominent. At first glance, you wouldn't think this is a zero-calorie, zero-sugar drink—it looks like a regular, rich cherry-flavored energy drink.

As I take a sip... the balance between the light sweetness and the faint tartness of cherry is well-crafted. The aftertaste is very refreshing, with almost no lingering cherry flavor, which is typical of zero-calorie drinks. As a cherry flavor, it’s easy to understand, well-balanced, and excellent. However, if you’re expecting a bold, rich cherry taste, you may be disappointed.

The tartness isn’t strong, making it easy to drink, but the sweetness has a noticeable artificial sweetener taste, which may be a dealbreaker for some. It’s not the kind of sweetness that doesn’t feel like a zero-calorie drink, like in the Monster Ultra or Rockstar Pure Zero series. Personally, I would’ve liked the artificial sweetener’s bitter-sweetness to be masked a bit more by the scent...

Best served chilled, straight from the can

After drinking several cans, I realized that chilling it well reduces the artificial sweetener taste significantly, making it easier to drink. Additionally, drinking it straight from the can without using a glass enhances the carbonation, and the refreshing tartness of the cherry pairs well with the effervescence, making it delicious.

This Cherry Edition has a surprisingly good match with the light flavor, which made it quite enjoyable. The thinness typical of Total Zero drinks may be a little noticeable, but it never feels cheap or low-quality.

For those who like a refreshing, not-too-sweet cherry flavor or don’t mind (or even enjoy) the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners, this would surely be a hit—a refreshing cherry-flavored drink. (Unfortunately, it was discontinued after about a year, which is a shame.)

Energy Ingredients of Cherry Edition

It contains 114mg of caffeine, 1000mg of taurine, and artificial sweeteners like sucralose and acesulfame K, with citric acid and other ingredients to adjust the tartness.

There aren’t any standout energy ingredients—it's just the standard Red Bull blend.

Clearly a different experience from the regular Edition series

Red Bull TOTAL ZERO Cherry edition
The can design was great, and the flavor name, Wild Cherry, really piqued my excitement. However, when I tasted the ultra-light Zero Cherry flavor, I was kind of surprised in a way.

It’s nothing like the regular Edition series; it’s the classic Total Zero taste. However, it’s not an overly artificial sweetener-heavy flavor either, so as a Zero Zero drink, it’s definitely well-executed.

If you prefer a light, refreshing fruit flavor, I definitely recommend the Total Zero Edition. But if you’re looking for a more intense and bold taste, I’d suggest going for the regular Edition series.

This design is cool, but I do wish they had matched the tab design to the overall theme...
