RED BULL WINTER EDITION 2016 Zwetschke-Zimtnelke

Posted on October 6, 2017 | Last updated February 14, 2025

RED BULL WINTER EDITION
This is a review of the RED BULL WINTER EDITION 2016 Zwetschke-Zimtnelke, the first-ever winter-themed Red Bull, which was released exclusively in Austria in preparation for the winter of 2016.

I had a feeling that a winter edition would eventually be released in some country, but I never expected it to be launched in Austria, the home country of Red Bull...

*Note: In 2017, the same winter edition was released outside of Austria, but it became a fruit flavor without the cinnamon.*

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of RED BULL WINTER EDITION 2016 Zwetschke-Zimtnelke

When opened, a berry-like aroma is released with a hint of spiciness. The flavor is prune and cinnamon.

The color in the glass is surprisingly elegant, with a calm and radiant purple. It’s not too blue, but has a faint reddish tint, making it look almost magical (*´艸`*). It also gives off a prune-like vibe.

When you bring it to your nose, the concentrated aroma of raisins is quite strong. Unlike the fresh berry-like scent I first noticed, the rich aroma makes you think, "Yes, this is definitely prune." Let's try drinking it now!

The first impression of the taste is that it’s a tangy raisin or prune, with very little sweetness. The fruit’s tartness and freshness persist, giving a deep and complex flavor. This can be said to be a high-level edition, a rare one we’ve been waiting for. It's on the same level or even better than the original Red Bull or Blue editions. I’ve been waiting for something like this! (*´;ω;`*)

The more you drink, the more you are "brainwashed" by the prune flavor, with its tartness and astringency. Furthermore, a subtle cinnamon flavor starts to appear halfway through, leaving a pleasant aftertaste. It’s not heavy, but still a rather intense flavor.

This calm flavor makes it perfect for sipping slowly by the fireplace on a cold winter night. If served ice-cold, it would be a shame as the flavor would be lost (^_^;)

Later, I tried chilling it, but I could hardly taste the cinnamon flavor. This is truly a flavor that should be enjoyed at room temperature during winter. Without the cinnamon aroma, you might dismiss it as "just another sour and astringent blueberry flavor." Red Bull really nailed it here (●´ω`●).

Now, let’s not worry about savoring it and just gulp it down! When you take large sips, you can feel the heavier, astringent prune taste even more intensely. Since you drink it quickly, the cinnamon flavor comes a bit later, lingering in the throat and escaping through the nose. No matter how you drink it, it’s delicious Σ(´∀`;).

Personally, I really enjoy complex flavors like this one from the Winter Edition. It's like wine or beer—it's fun to think about the layers of taste.

Since the 2015 Orange Edition, the series had started to feel like it had cheapened, but this edition brings a shock with its next-level taste. It surpasses the level of soda, standing in a league of its own. Before drinking, I thought maybe cinnamon didn’t need to be added, but I was wrong—this is exactly how it should be (*´ェ`*).

Energy Ingredients of RED BULL WINTER EDITION 2016 Zwetschke-Zimtnelke

It contains 80mg of caffeine and 1000mg of taurine. As usual, the ingredient composition is nothing out of the ordinary. There’s no extra punch like the overseas versions.

Design of the Winter Edition

First of all, the color of the can is wonderful. It has warmth and a sense of luxury. The balance of colors between the can and the contents is well thought out and stylish.

The ingredient list is positioned so it doesn’t obscure the bull logo.

I suddenly realized that the subdued main color and design seem to match the calm color of the flavor name itself.

Other editions tend to use silver or colors that match the can’s theme, but the Winter Edition uses gold, which makes it stand out from previous editions.

It’s not flat but instead has a sophisticated and warm charm—very stylish (●´ω`●). If the flavor name was in silver, the overall impression would have been much weaker.

The tab is silver, as it’s the Austrian version. If the tab were the same color as the can, I’d probably freak out!

Plum-Cinnamon Flavor Released in Limited Locations

RED BULL WINTER EDITION 2016 Zwetschke-Zimtnelke
The world’s first Winter Edition was released in Austria in 2016. The snowflake imagery is the best representation of the experience for those who have tried it.

The following year, in 2017, it was also released in South Korea and Germany, but countries like Canada and the U.S. got a version without cinnamon, called "Plum Twist."

Since the taste is completely different, you won’t be able to enjoy the rich flavor and aroma of this edition in North America. Due to the flavor difference, it’s almost like a completely different product, which is a shame. Unfortunately, you won’t get to enjoy the plum-cinnamon combination that’s perfect for a slow, cozy winter night.

I’m not sure why they decided to remove the cinnamon and the rich, calming plum combination. Luckily, when I traveled to South Korea, I managed to find some expired stock of the Winter Edition, and I was able to enjoy the same flavor as Zwetschke-Zimtnelke. For global products, it would be great if they could keep the flavor consistent across all regions.
