Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018 Rumtopf

Posted on March 20, 2020 | Last updated February 8, 2025

Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018 Rumtopf
Released in Austria in 2018, the Red Bull WINTER EDITION Rumtopf.

In 2019, a very similar Winter Edition was released in countries outside of Austria, but the flavor is slightly different in the original Austria release. It really feels like the flagship product from Austria has a stronger sense of craftsmanship... and it’s truly wonderful.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018 Rumtopf

The contents are orange, just like the color of the can. It might look like orange juice, but the scent is completely different, with a rich and tangy fragrance that reminds me of apple pie or cherry pie.
Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018 Rumtopf
Traditional "Rumtopf," which is made by soaking seasonal fruits, often turns a dark red color after being soaked for a long time. However, Red Bull's version of Rumtopf is slightly cloudy orange, which feels a bit strange.

Now, let's give it a try.

The sweet and heavy aroma spreads with a fruity, tangy taste. The flavor of apple, raisin, and berry, which have been slowly soaked in sugar, stands out with a sweet and sour taste. Surprisingly, it's not as strong as the scent, and it's quite refreshing to drink.

The sweet fragrance and flavor have the taste of syrup soaked in sugar, with the rich flavor of softened fruits as if you're eating fruit soaked in syrup. I can't help but think that if this had real fruit juice, it would have been even more amazing, but I'm impressed with how Red Bull Austria managed to recreate this flavor without any juice.

What is Rumtopf?

According to locals, Rumtopf is a traditional winter alcoholic drink made by soaking fruits, sugar, and rum in a rum pot.

People tend to add their favorite fruits, such as strawberries, apples, apricots, red berries, blueberries, and raisins. You can see how it's made in a simple video from someone who is soaking fruits.

They usually let it sit in a cool, dark place for a few months to half a year, and then enjoy it during Christmas or New Year's. It's great that anyone can easily make it.

Here's a video of someone opening Rumtopf made in the summer at Christmas.

This looks delicious... I imagine buying a bunch of berry fruits at the farmer's market and making my own Rumtopf... just the thought of it is exciting. I think I'll make it myself at home (*´ェ`*)

In other videos, the Rumtopf looks red and cloudy, and I wish Red Bull's WINTER EDITION 2018 had been that red, cloudy color too.

Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018–2019 Taste Comparison

The Red Bull WINTER EDITION Rumtopf was released in Austria in 2018. The following year, similar winter editions were released worldwide, but the flavors are different from Rumtopf. So, let's compare the taste from three countries.

From left to right: Austria 2018, Germany 2019, and Canada 2019.

Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018 Rumtopf
The contents are almost the same orange color. Only the original Austrian version is slightly cloudy. You wouldn't really notice the difference unless you line them up.

Red Bull WINTER EDITION 2018 Rumtopf
The flavor names are Rumtopf, Spiced Cherry (Spekulatius-Kirsch), and Holiday Spice. Since only Rumtopf is named after an alcoholic drink, it's understandable that this one is the only one with cloudiness.

The fragrance is almost identical across all three countries. But are there any taste differences? Let's try them.

The Austrian Rumtopf has a mellow, sweet and sour flavor, while the German and Canadian versions have a more noticeable tartness, with flavors of cherry and berry. There is a hint of cinnamon-like spice in the aroma, but it doesn't affect the taste.

They all offer a rich flavor, and while the flavors are close, you can clearly see that the Austrian version has a more distinctive fruity richness from the soaked fruits.

Whether you prefer the constantly rich taste of Rumtopf or the more refreshing fruitiness of the 2019 worldwide Winter Edition is up to personal taste.

Personally, I’m happy I got to learn about Rumtopf through the Winter Edition and could taste it, albeit in a simulated form. It was definitely worth hunting it down in Austria. I’m thinking of making my own Rumtopf starting this summer (*´ェ`*)
