Red Bull Yellow Edition (Japan)

Posted on February 28, 2021 | Last updated February 5, 2025

Red Bull Yellow Edition (Japan)
In Japan, the first Red Bull Summer Edition was launched in 2015, and later, in 2018, it became a regular product as the Yellow Edition.

Since its release, Yellow Edition was only available at select stores, so it wasn’t widely known. However, around 2020, it began appearing in some nationwide chain drugstores, making it more accessible to the public.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Tart and Sweet Citrus Tropical Fruit Flavor

The color of the drink is a transparent yellow, without any fruitiness. Since the Red Bull Edition series contains no fruit juice, there’s surprisingly little emphasis on cloudy appearances.

Red Bull Yellow Edition (Japan)

Upon sipping, a sweet and tart tropical fruit flavor of orange, lemon, and pineapple spreads. The pleasant acidity and unique tropical fruit aroma are complemented by a Japanese-inspired yuzu flavor, making it a smooth citrus fruit mix that’s easy to drink (๑´ڡ`๑).

Considering how delicious it is, 250ml seems a bit small. It’s been 7 years since I first drank it in the U.S. when it was released in 2014, and the 355ml size in the U.S. is definitely the right choice. Delicious 250ml cans like this often disappear before I even realize it while writing reviews.

Despite its incredible flavor, it’s curious that it’s only sold at select stores. It would be great to see it alongside the regular White Edition, offering more variety and helping people discover the deliciousness of the Edition series.

Red Bull Yellow Edition's Energy Ingredients

It contains 80mg of caffeine and 300mg of arginine. The ingredients are quite standard, and I appreciate the brand not engaging in the over-the-top caffeine content race.

Red Bull Yellow Edition's Design

The yellow can with “Yellow Edition” is straightforward and easy to understand. At first, when the Edition concept was still new in Japan, it received some cold comments like “Red Bull, but yellow?” But, it’s now one of the longest-selling Red Bull products in Japan.

The flavor is clearly marked as “Tropical Fruit.” After this, Red Bull Japan began using more abstract product names, making it harder to know the flavor just by looking at the front of the can (although they later changed it to include specific flavor names).

For more details, check out past reviews of the Fresh Breeze, Sunny Beam, and Refreshing Splash. The "Tropical" label is a great way to know the flavor even before buying it, which I think is very helpful.

From the Original Summer Edition to Yellow Edition

Here are the different versions of the Yellow Edition series released in Japan. Starting with the Summer Edition, it transitioned into the Yellow Edition with two variations.

The contents didn’t change, but there were some updates to the labeling rules, which led to the creation of the third generation.

April 2024, Design Update to the 7th Generation with Red Bull Mark

In April 2024, the design of the Edition series was updated with a white, circular Red Bull logo, marking the 7th generation of the Yellow Edition design.

This logo first appeared on the Red Bull Summer Edition 2023 Mango Pineapple released on June 6, 2023. It was originally used to mark new products, but when it became a regular product, the Red Bull logo without the "NEW" mark was added to the Edition cans.

It does feel a bit confusing, but it seems that without the noticeable Red Bull mark, the Edition might not be recognized as part of the Red Bull series by the general public. However, after 10 years of Edition releases in Japan, I hope this won’t be the case.

Yellow Edition Released in 2018 Was Limited to Specific Stores

When the Yellow Edition was first released in 2018, it was sold only in select restaurants, internet cafes, and university co-ops. I remember going to TGI Fridays to try it, but it was already out of stock… I left disappointed, recalling my American-style meal.

Now, it seems to be available at drugstores like "Welcia," "Tsuruha Drug," and "Kusuri no Fukutaro." With the price drop for Red Bull, it has become more affordable, and I hope it will expand to more convenience stores and supermarkets nationwide.
