Relentless DEVOTION 20% BERRY JUICED ENERGY
Relentless Energy Drink's juice-infused energy series brings us this berry-flavored edition. The product name may vary slightly between different cans, but for consistency, I’ve referred to it as “DEVOTION BERRY JUICED ENERGY.”
This review covers the 2016 version with 20% juice content. If you're interested, be sure to check out my review of the older 50% juice version as well!

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Tangy Raspberry & Strawberry Flavor
As soon as you open the can, a rich aroma of raspberries, strawberries, and cranberries fills the air. The scent is so deep and luxurious that it immediately conveys the presence of real fruit juice.
Upon tasting, the flavor begins with a tangy raspberry note, which gradually transitions into a sweet strawberry aroma, creating a complex red berry mix.
This berry flavor is not just sweet but also carries a subtle astringency, making it an enjoyable experience with evolving taste layers. Juice-infused energy drinks with such complexity are among my favorites (๑´ڡ`๑).
With 20% juice content, the balance between fruitiness and smooth texture is well-maintained. The drink is neither too thick nor too thin, ensuring a pleasant mouthfeel. The reduced juice content from 50% to 20% seems to have been a good decision in terms of drinkability.
Degradation Test of Wing Slide Cap
Relentless DEVOTION was released in both pull-tab and wing slide cap versions.
For this review, I opened two additional cans from different years: a 2013 pull-tab version and a 2012 wing slide cap version. Let's compare them to see the effects of aging.
On the left is the pull-tab version, and on the right is the wing slide cap version.
The right can shows a significantly darker color, indicating more degradation. The pull-tab can, being fully sealed, has retained carbonation and minimized color change, while the wing slide cap can, due to lower sealing capability, has lost carbonation and deteriorated more severely.
In terms of taste, the pull-tab version, despite some aging, still retains a refreshing berry tartness. Even after seven years (since its 2013 production), the combination of sweet, tangy, and slightly astringent berry notes remains drinkable.
In contrast, the degraded wing slide cap version is nearly undrinkable. The unpleasant transformation of sweetness and acidity, often referred to as "apricot-like degradation," along with an overwhelming bitterness, makes for an unpleasant experience (;´∀`).
While the wing slide cap design was an interesting innovation, it struggled to maintain quality over time. This is why all current Relentless products now use pull-tab cans.

Design of Relentless DEVOTION 20% BERRY JUICED ENERGY
Here are some different versions of DEVOTION 20%. The Coca-Cola era Relentless series featured intricate and often difficult-to-decipher designs, and this berry edition is no exception.
A hand stretches from the bottom left, while above it, ribs, a heart, snakes, and plants intertwine in a mysterious composition. Relentless cans are known for their abstract yet impactful designs, and this berry edition is particularly enigmatic.
Interestingly, a few early 20% juice cans featured the same initial design as the older 50% juice version.
The lush, overgrown vegetation design was a personal favorite. For a more detailed review of the 50% juice version, please check out my other post. Personally, I prefer this plant-themed design (*´ェ`*).
