Relentless ENERGY DRINK ORIGIN
Relentless's original flavor, ORIGIN, was manufactured by Coca-Cola in the UK. It was renewed in 2014 when it became part of the Monster Energy brand. Currently, it is sold by Monster Energy.
In this review, I've compared the old version of Relentless with the new one, and also included a rare addition of the American Relentless. So, not only will you find a taste and design review, but you can also enjoy this as a valuable reference.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of Relentless ENERGY DRINK ORIGIN
A bright and beautiful yellow. It’s the classic color for energy drinks, isn’t it?
When you take a sip, the flavor is a balanced, sweet and sour fruity one, with neither the fragrance nor the taste being overpowering, creating a well-matched, stable flavor.
There’s a caramel-like sweetness that stands out, but the acidity is well-balanced, and overall, it’s not heavy, so the sweet aftertaste doesn’t linger in your mouth or nose, making it a flavor that seems to appeal to a wide audience.
I really like this classic flavor. I believe the best kind of flavor is one that doesn’t lean too much towards sweetness, sourness, fragrance, or a chemical taste, but leaves you satisfied without lingering too long, and Relentless ORIGIN nails this. However, with such a safe flavor, it loses the distinct characteristics that are typically associated with Relentless.
Energy Components of Relentless ENERGY DRINK ORIGIN
Contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, and 10mg of guarana. A pretty standard composition. When Relentless first launched, it was marketed with the idea of being “twice as strong as Red Bull,” and the contents follow that idea without adding anything extra.
Comparing the History of Relentless ENERGY DRINK ORIGIN
Let’s do a comparison of Relentless ENERGY DRINK ORIGIN from 2008 to 2017, a unique content for energy drink enthusiasts.
From left to right, we have the 2008 classic UK origin, the 2010 German Wingslide in the middle, and the 2017 UK version on the right.
Looking at the color, they are quite different. The 2008 version still maintained its carbonation even after 12 years, which is impressive. The German Wingslide version in the middle had no carbonation left (the bubbles on the glass are from the air when poured, not from carbonation). That’s the unfortunate part about this type of can… I've tried several versions from different countries, and unless you drink them within the first year of release, they deteriorate so quickly that you can’t fully enjoy them.
2008 UK
The carbonation was still strong, but it had clearly deteriorated. Compared to the fresher versions I had in the past, the acidity had become noticeably sharper and the sweetness had slightly faded. I was surprised by how much the taste had changed since I drank UK Origins from 2009, 2010, and 2012 back in 2014. The color is darker, but this is not due to deterioration; I think it was always like this. The recent Origins have just become much brighter.
2010 Germany
Then we have the worst version, the 2010 German Wingslide, which has deteriorated flavor. The color has clearly changed. The fragrance has become a much stronger, sweeter one compared to when I drank it years ago. I remember it having a brighter, fresher scent, but this change is inevitable.
No matter what, you can’t prevent the deterioration of Wingslide, which is unfortunate. However, the taste still holds some of its original form, which was a bit surprising. The balance of sweetness and acidity remained the same, but the overall smooth flavor had definitely faded. It really proves that energy drinks should be consumed while fresh. Σ(´∀`;)
The Old Relentless Design is Just Insane
Now, let’s take a look at the 2008 design that was used in this comparison. Relentless is known for its striking design and Gothic-style logo.
The old Relentless series often featured images of reaching godly domains, which made the designs stand out. They were very different from other energy drink designs at the time.
Later on, the design evolved into more of a side profile with godly elements depicted in the Origin design.
This look was still pretty cool, but when they moved to using the "R" logo as the focal point, things started to go downhill. Eventually, the design transitioned to what it is today under the Monster Energy umbrella.
Interestingly, the German Wingslide version eventually lost its human imagery (^_^;)
And now, we have the new design. The version of Relentless ORIGIN reviewed here is the one from the Monster Energy era, with a newly refreshed look.
The "R" logo with the bird design is somewhat unimpressive compared to the previous designs. It’s fair to say that the design has deteriorated, and the feedback has been pretty negative.
The can I opened for this review was a limited campaign can, so the back looks like this.
I had previously drunk the regular version, but considering this was the campaign can, it turned out to be a nice introduction.
Here’s a glimpse of some of the historic Relentless ORIGIN cans I managed to get in the frame.
I happened to find two cans still in stock from the back of the box, so it was a stroke of luck that I was able to put together this comparison. It made me realize once again that it’s best to drink them within their expiration date, as the older cans I had before still tasted great without any deterioration.
American Version of Relentless ORIGINAL
Not many people know that Relentless was sold in the US back in 2010. The size changed from the EU 500ml to the American 473ml, and the name was changed from ORIGIN to ORIGINAL.
The taste is quite similar to the EU ORIGIN base, so there isn’t much of a difference, but it still suffered from some deterioration. The acidity was a bit stronger, and the balance with sweetness was off, causing the fruity and refreshing flavor to lose some of its charm. However, I was surprised that the fragrance had not deteriorated as much as I expected, and it still maintained that classic fragrance.
The design follows the classic UK ORIGIN look. It was great that they introduced it to the US during this design period.
Interestingly, the American version includes design elements not found in the EU version, such as a barcode that features the silhouette of London’s Tower Bridge and Big Ben, adding a stylish touch.
Additionally, the "R" logo looks like something from the Freemasons, which I find intriguing. The American design is definitely more playful and I like it more than the EU version.
