In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Strongly Acidic Orange-Based Tropical Fruit Flavor
The liquid inside is a dense, cloudy brown, showing clear signs of aging, but the strong carbonation remains intact. The juice sediment gives it a heavy appearance, yet the aroma surprisingly retains the scent of fresh orange pulp.
Upon tasting, a sharp, acidic orange flavor dominates. The fresh pulp-like taste and the bitter notes of orange peel are evident, making it surprising that the flavor hasn't deteriorated as much as its color suggests.
While it's labeled as an "orange & tropical fruit flavor," the orange impression is much stronger than the tropical fruit aspect.
Despite being over 12 years old, the taste remains unexpectedly enjoyable, with minimal signs of aging. Juice-based drinks often develop an apricot-like taste as they degrade, but this one has held up remarkably well.
Energy Ingredients of Relentless IMMORTUS 50% TROPICAL JUICED ENERGY
Contains 160mg of caffeine and 2000mg of taurine. Of the 50% juice content, 43% is orange, while the remaining 7% consists of apricot, guava, mango, and passion fruit.
Design of Relentless IMMORTUS 50% TROPICAL JUICED ENERGY
The original IMMORTUS 50% design is characterized by lush greenery. Like the simultaneously released 50% juice-based Relentless DEVOTION JUICE BERRY FLAVOR, it also features a fly, making it look far from a typical food product.
The green and floral design doesn’t exactly scream "orange-based tropical fruit flavor."
During the Coca-Cola era, Relentless cans were more about conveying a unique aesthetic rather than representing the drink's actual flavor. So, analyzing the connection between the contents and the can design feels almost pointless.
In 2010, the entire Relentless lineup underwent a design change.
The one on the left is also a 50% juice-based tropical fruit flavor, but the design has taken on a more mythological and destructive theme. The 20% juice version also adopted this new design. Which one do you prefer? For a juice-type drink like this, I personally prefer the older design.
The top features a gold tab, adding to the luxurious feel, much like an old botanical illustration. There’s something undeniably classy about it. (*´ェ`*) Among the Relentless series, IMMORTUS 50% is one of my favorites in terms of design.
