Rip It CITRUS X

Posted on November 2, 2015 | Last updated February 12, 2025

Rip It CITRUS X
Rip It Energy Drink, a budget-friendly energy drink brand from the United States, introduces Citrus X.

This is one of the most poorly rated drinks in the Rip It series. It’s quite rare to come across an energy drink with such a bad reputation (^_^;)

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of Rip It CITRUS X

When opened, a fresh, sweet tropical fruit scent bursts out.

Rip It CITRUS X
When poured into a glass, it appears as a cloudy, bright yellow. The color is somewhat artificially vibrant and has a fruit drink-like appearance. In Japan, it might resemble the lemon flavor of Calpis Energy.

The flavor is quite different from the sweet tropical scent initially perceived—it's a mild sweetness and a thin, tropical fruit flavor. There's no fruity richness, no acidity, and the texture is very watery, making it feel unusually diluted. If you were expecting a rich fruit mix based on the scent, you'll be extremely disappointed. It's so light that it lacks any substantial mouthfeel.

There’s a slight chemical flavor, and it comes across more like a mild children's medicine rather than tropical fruit juice.

Despite the sweet tropical fruit aroma, the flavor is light, artificial, and awkward. It’s not undrinkable, but it's not something I would want to force myself to drink. Also, the product name "Citrus X" doesn’t seem to fit the taste at all.

Energy Ingredients of Rip It CITRUS X

The drink contains 200mg of caffeine, 2020mg of taurine, and 6mg of guarana. The energy ingredients are pretty standard, but the amounts are oddly a bit higher than usual.

The difference in ingredients between $1 and $2 energy drinks is usually minimal. The pricing of $2 or ¥200 for an energy drink often just imitates what other companies are doing, so it might be better to focus on setting an effective price point and proper branding. The Rip It series does this well (be sure to read all of the series reviews).

Design of Rip It CITRUS X

Rip It uses both horizontal and vertical designs with varying placements.

Rip It CITRUS X
The Rip It series uses a common design with a yellow-based can. I initially expected a lemon-like flavor from the name "Citrus X," but the taste was completely different, which was surprising.

Rip It CITRUS X
Currently, the label says "Energy Drink," but it used to be labeled "Energy Supplement."

The tab is a yellow-ringed tab. Even with a low-cost energy drink brand, it's nice to see the main can color and tab color match, which appeals to enthusiasts. These small details are appreciated by fans.

So, even if a product doesn’t taste great sometimes, it’s fun to enjoy the variety of flavors in a series, with both good and bad options. That’s the charm of American energy drink brands.
