Rockstar Energy Drink Reviews
ROCKSTAR
The original Rockstar series. This includes products with a chemical-like flavor, such as the original, as well as one-off products that haven't been part of a series. The older Rockstar products, in particular, are often unique standalone items, making them quite interesting.
Store Exclusive Products
Some Rockstar series products are sold exclusively in certain stores. While some may remain exclusive, others are later made available nationwide after a period of time, often referred to as "nationwide release" or "全米開放" in Japanese.

- Rockstar Energy Drinks in Japan
Though gradually being forgotten, Rockstar Energy Drinks were actually sold in Japan. In fact, it arrived earlier than Monster, so many people might not even know about it now! The fact that it was "no longer available" or "disappeared" seems to be unknown. This article will explain the story of Rockstar's entry into and withdrawal from Japan.
2008: Rockstar's First Launch in Japan
Too Ahead of Its Time with the 410ml Large-Capacity Cans
Rockstar Energy Drinks made their debut in Japan in June 2008 with 410ml cans. A 410ml can was considered a large capacity ahead of its time. As a result, the price was quite high, making it difficult for many people to buy. Perhaps for this reason, a 250ml can was introduced in March 2009.
Rockstar Was the Only Brand to Bring "America's Most Popular" Straight to Japan
Looking back now, Rockstar was perhaps the most "rocking" energy drink in Japan. At the time, they teamed up with X JAPAN’s YOSHIKI as a producer and launched extravagant promotional events, including wrapped buses and Lamborghinis. I vaguely remember it, not being particularly into rock music, but I later learned how flashy their promotional efforts were (;´∀`).
Additionally, they started a collaboration with *Terminator 4* and aired TV commercials. Can you imagine an energy drink launching like this? It was not just another "popular in America" product—this was a launch that mirrored the scale of America's marketing efforts. Although it might have been a bit excessive, it’s clear that Rockstar entered Japan with all the ambition of its American roots.
Change of Distributor to Molson Coors Japan
The 410ml cans were heavily discounted both in physical stores and on online platforms like Rakuten, eventually being sold for 19 yen at discount store Jason, marking an incredible low point. Initially, they were distributed by OGB, but later the distribution was taken over by Molson Coors Japan. This change helped Rockstar survive in Japan.
In 2011, the design shifted from an all-black theme to an EU-style design, but there was no major promotional campaign around that time.
2014: Launch of Rockstar Sparkling
In September 2014, Rockstar Sparkling was launched exclusively on Amazon. It was never sold in stores, and it was only available for case purchase, which made it hard to access for some people.
Back in the OGB days, Rockstar went all out with extravagant promotions, including a YOSHIKI-themed Lamborghini. But by the time Sparkling was released, Rockstar had faded into obscurity (;´∀`).
The Story of Rockstar Energy Drinks' Withdrawal from Japan
Surprisingly Low Brand Recognition in Japan
As sales decreased, Rockstar even appeared in Dydo vending machines in Japan, but was often referred to as "Dydo's energy drink" on the internet. Despite its global popularity, Rockstar became a textbook example of how even top global brands can struggle in Japan (ヽ´ω`).
This is a vending machine located near Kodemmacho or Nihonbashi station. The slogan “Sharpen your business!” shows how Rockstar lost its way here. (´;ω;`)
Another Clearance Sale Begins
In 2015, Rockstar's original product went on a clearance sale for just 33 yen per can in case packs. This marked the beginning of the end of the energy drink boom. Additionally, Rockstar Sparkling, which had been exclusive to Amazon, went on sale at half price, making it more accessible to a broader audience. In that sense, it might have been a good thing.
The Nightmare Returns for Rockstar in Japan, Leading to Its Withdrawal
Rockstar Sparkling, which had originally been exclusive to Amazon, ended up being sold at discount stores like Jason. Even after switching distributors to Molson Coors Japan, Rockstar's final moments in Japan were marked by the discounted sale at Jason. This eventually led to Rockstar Energy Drinks' withdrawal from Japan.
