ROCKSTAR BAJA MANGO LIME
This is the Mango Lime flavor from Rockstar's new Baja series, which was released in spring 2019 as a regional limited edition in the U.S. before being rolled out nationwide. I bought it right after its release in San Francisco. The design really stands out in stores, it’s pretty cool.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of ROCKSTAR BAJA MANGO LIME
As soon as the can is opened, a sweet mango-peach-like aroma bursts out. It gives off a refreshing scent that almost makes you think it contains fruit juice. However, ROCKSTAR BAJA MANGO LIME is actually juice-free.
It’s transparent with a bright orange color, and the appearance doesn’t give off a fruit or freshly squeezed vibe.
Upon tasting, the flavors of sweet mango, peach, and nectarine spread across the palate. It’s moderately sweet without being too sticky, and the base flavor is peach-like. The lime flavor listed in the product name is barely noticeable.
While the flavor and aroma match well, the aftertaste and the scent that escapes through the nose remain flat, without any changes or complexity to enjoy throughout the drinking experience. It’s not unpleasant or jarring, but it feels like just drinking a regular sweetened mango-peach juice, which is a bit disappointing.
If there was more of a shift in the flavor—something like "refreshing, juicy mouthfeel, with a rich fruitiness lingering after the drink, and fruity aromas remaining as an aftertaste"—I feel it could have been a more luxurious fruit flavor experience. Given the flashy packaging, many might feel "overhyped but ended up being just ordinary" after trying it. It’s unclear if this was a test product, but in the U.S., it didn’t last a year.
Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR BAJA MANGO LIME
Contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, 50mg of carnitine, 50mg of inositol, ginseng, and guarana.
Design of ROCKSTAR BAJA MANGO LIME
The now familiar Mexican skull design for energy drinks, with mango eyes. While it’s impactful, upon closer inspection, it’s just a simple design of repeated skulls stamped across the can. (^_^;)
Because of the big star design, you can’t see the brand name or series name from the side of the can. It’s a bit of a dilemma—should the big star, which stands out through the glass doors of a store, be the focal point, or is it better to have all the product names clearly on the front?
The tab is a refreshing light blue, matching the can color.
The American BAJA series started with two flavors: ROCKSTAR BAJA MANGO LIME and ROCKSTAR BAJA GUAVA, but unfortunately, a third flavor never came out, and the series ended within a year. While the design is eye-catching, the question remains whether anyone would actually buy this flavor, considering it’s a full-sugar drink with this taste.
Later, in Europe, the BAJA series evolved with new flavors unique to the region, and it seems that Europe is having a better run with the BAJA series than the U.S. The reasons for this will be explored in the review of the European BAJA series.
