ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT
Released around September 2016, Rockstar Blackout was initially a limited edition available exclusively at certain U.S. universities.
However, starting in 2017, it was made available nationwide, becoming the Second Edition.
It was later expanded to Canada and was discontinued in 2019.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
Flavor of ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT
When you open the can, a typical Rockstar chemical scent hits you, and the color is a bright yellow, reminiscent of high levels of vitamin B. When poured into a glass, yellow bubbles rise up in a fluffy cloud.
As you take a sip, the tanginess and medicinal bitterness spread in your mouth. Many of you might be wondering what the difference is between this and the original Rockstar. Compared to the original, the Blackout has a more noticeable lingering acidity.
Although the acidity, bitterness, and chemical scent don’t stay in your mouth too long, the lack of sharpness and refreshing sensation means it can quickly become a bit tiresome. It’s a flavor you can find anywhere, so there’s no real need to buy Blackout.
By the way, while it’s fine to drink ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT as it is, mixing it with various types of alcohol and chilling it with plenty of ice surprisingly makes for a quite decent flavor. Considering the background of how ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT was released, I can’t help but wonder if it was specifically designed for mixing with alcohol! (as explained later)
Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT
It contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, 200mg of guarana, 100mg of glucuronolactone, 100mg of carnitine, 100mg of inositol, ginseng, and the usual energy ingredients.
During development, it was initially intended to be a guarana-heavy product (planned to contain 1000mg), but when it was released, it ended up with a more standard energy ingredient composition. Too bad.
Design of ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT
One of the products that became a big hit in the U.S. was ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT.
When it was first released in 2016, it was a limited edition sold only at select universities and similar institutions. The reason it was initially limited to universities is little known, but in fact, it was a product created for a PR event held in 2017, before it was released for general sale in 2017.
As you can see, Rockstar and the event company traveled to various universities. By the way, I went to the U.S. in the fall of 2016 just to buy Blackout (*´艸`*) I went there specifically for Blackout and also visited the Monster Energy headquarters. Great memories.

The event that took place every year was like this:
After the event, it was released nationwide in the U.S. in 2017, and later, a Canadian version of ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT was introduced.
Comparing U.S. and Canadian ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT
Let’s compare the U.S. version of ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT with the Canadian version, which was released later.
On the left is the original U.S. version, and on the right is the Canadian ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT.
Both have the same bright yellow color. When poured into a glass, both produce yellow bubbles that seem to suggest something not so good for your health (^_^;)
When tasting both, the flavor and aroma are almost identical between the U.S. and Canadian versions. However, upon tasting them side by side, the Canadian version has a slightly milder chemical bitterness, making it a bit easier to drink.
That said, before I compared them, I had already tried both the U.S. and Canadian versions multiple times, and I didn’t notice any significant difference in the strength of the chemical flavor. The difference is really that small. I’m curious to know how both versions were received in the U.S. and Canada.
The ingredient composition is nearly identical in both versions.
Unfortunately, ROCKSTAR BLACKOUT has already been discontinued in both the U.S. and Canada. Since it originally had a taste similar to that of Rockstar's other flavors, there’s really no point in buying Blackout anymore. After being released as a limited edition for 3 years, it lasted longer than I expected.
