In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.
ROCKSTAR FREEZE FROZEN WATERMELON's Flavor
Upon opening, there's a slight, subdued green note typical of watermelon flavor, although it's quite mild. In many countries, watermelon is associated with the green, rind-like aroma, which is distinctive.
When poured into a glass, the liquid was pink.
I had expected it to be the bright red color of the can, but perhaps the perception of watermelon drinks differs between Germany and Japan.
When tasted, there’s almost no sweetness, and the acidity is strong, with a slight aftertaste lingering. It doesn’t taste much like watermelon but more like a mix of acerola and guava. The tartness lacks a fruitiness and feels more like pure citric acid, which is a bit disappointing.
Interestingly, the green note noticed earlier when opening the can isn’t bothersome while drinking. If you didn’t know this was a watermelon-flavored energy drink, you might not even recognize it as such... Plus, the color isn’t what most Japanese people would associate with watermelon.
ROCKSTAR FREEZE FROZEN WATERMELON's Energy Ingredients
It contains 160mg of caffeine, 2000mg of taurine, along with ginseng, guarana, and more. It’s a fairly standard energy drink formula.
Despite the strong acidity, I was surprised to find that 65g of sugar is included in the 500ml can. It’s definitely something to keep in mind and drink in moderation.
Comparing the Frozen Watermelon from 3 Countries
After trying Frozen Watermelon from several countries, I noticed differences in the color of the drink, so I thought I’d compare the remaining three countries' versions.
From left to right, we have Canada, Australia, and the U.K.
You can clearly see the difference in color. Whether it looks like watermelon or not, it’s rare to see such beautiful color variations in the same product (*´艸`*)
Although all versions have that characteristic watermelon-like greenish scent, it’s not overwhelming. The flavor in each version made it difficult to tell if it really tasted like watermelon. This was a common impression across all three.
Canada
The Canadian version has a good balance of sweetness and acidity, and it gives off a light tropical mix flavor. After drinking, there’s a slight menthol refreshment, which gives it that typical "freeze" taste.
Australia
The Australian version emphasizes sweetness and doesn’t have much acidity. Honestly, I couldn’t pinpoint the exact flavor. There was also no menthol refreshment like in Canada. This one was the least impressive among the three.
The U.K.
The U.K. version has a color quite similar to the German one, and the flavor is very close as well. It’s quite acidic, and it doesn’t taste like watermelon at all. There’s no sweetness or heaviness, and it clearly doesn’t taste like watermelon. I believe the base is the same as the German Frozen Watermelon.
It’s interesting to see how different countries have varying ideas about watermelon flavor and its color, and it’s fun to discover these nuances just by drinking energy drinks.
One Among the Watermelon Flavor Rush
In 2015, various energy drink brands across Europe released watermelon-flavored drinks. For some reason, there was a surge that year. I was lucky to be able to try almost every brand.
Among them, Rockstar stood out for having a relatively mild, rind-like green note, and it wasn’t the typical watermelon flavor most Japanese people would expect. If it were released in Japan, it might not be well-received unless the flavor was adjusted to suit local tastes.
