ROCKSTAR HORCHATA

Posted on October 12, 2015 | Last updated February 13, 2025

ROCKSTAR HORCHATA
Rockstar’s limited-edition product, a non-carbonated Horchata.

Rockstar has been turning new beverages into energy drinks that weren’t available in the energy drink market before, but it often feels like they release products regardless of demand, and many of them don’t end up being sold long-term. ROCKSTAR HORCHATA is one of those products.

In 2001, while living in the United States, I encountered energy drinks through the dance scene and was deeply impressed. After returning to Japan, I found that energy drinks were considered novelty beverages, so I established a comprehensive website in 2013 to share the true appeal of energy drinks. As an energy drink enthusiast, I began drinking them seriously again, collecting over 7,000 varieties of energy drinks from various countries. I am also active as a critic and expert, receiving media interviews.

Flavor of ROCKSTAR HORCHATA

Though I’ve heard of horchata, I had never tried it before. I couldn’t even imagine what it would taste like...
When I opened the can, a strong cinnamon aroma immediately burst out.

ROCKSTAR HORCHATA
When poured into a glass, it’s a milky white color, and the cinnamon aroma and sweet scent spread rapidly, so I was already nervous before even taking a sip (;´∀`). American sweet and milky beverages always make me hesitate.

When I drank it, the sweet cinnamon fragrance mixed with a spicy, roasted taste, and overall, it was quite sweet. But instead of the rich sweetness of sugar or milk, it was very smooth and didn’t leave a lingering aftertaste. The mouthfeel was refreshing, quite different from what I had expected before drinking it, which seemed like it would be thicker. Even at room temperature, it didn’t leave much of an aftertaste.

Horchata is made by squeezing the stalks of tiger nuts (chufa), then flavoring it with sugar and cinnamon. It’s similar to soy milk or almond milk in terms of flavor profile, offering a refreshing taste with a clean aftertaste, making it easy to drink.

However, I’m not a huge fan of this kind of drink, so I gave up midway (´∀`;)

Energy Ingredients of ROCKSTAR HORCHATA

ROCKSTAR HORCHATA
With 225mg of caffeine, it’s on the higher side. It also contains 2000mg of taurine, 200mg of guarana, 50mg of carnitine, and some ginseng.

Of course, since it’s non-carbonated, be sure to shake it well before drinking.

All Trendy Beverages Have Been Discontinued

ROCKSTAR HORCHATA
The design is great, with green, white, and red, and a majestic eagle in the center, representing Mexico itself. It’s a very eye-catching design, and I think it looks good, but the content is horchata, right?

Horchata is a common beverage in Spanish-speaking countries, but whether it's a fair comparison or not, it feels like it’s something like hojicha energy or barley tea energy for Japanese people. Would you pay over 200 yen for that...? (´∀`;)

There was no real need for it to be a Rockstar product, so I think it was doomed from the start. Almond milk was a bit of a trend too, but everything was discontinued. I feel like this could’ve been something other than an expensive Rockstar product.

Rockstar is always fun with its new challenges, but I hope they’ll go with beverages that are more likely to last longer next time.w

ROCKSTAR HORCHATA
Green top with a red tab. The color scheme really shows the freedom in energy drink can designs. It incorporates the colors of the Mexican flag, and I’m glad it wasn’t just a plain silver top and silver tab for the U.S. release.w
